IMG_3942.JPG Western Express at the Irvings off exit 80 on I95 in Maine. I was fueling up and heard this huge BANG! He was parked and as he took off and started to turn is when it come off. I'm guessing someone pulled the release on him.

I don't understand how hard is it to move your head 90 degrees right before you step up into the truck to see your release handle.

I checked my fifth every time I was parked.

    Every. Time.

People can be evil sometimes-unless the fifth wheel jaws were defective (they've disengaged on me a couple of times when I did tug tests AND checked the jaws and the release handle after hooking up to a trailer). The good thing is that this happened at a service plaza and not on I-95 itself at highway speeds as the results would've been catastrophic,to say the least.

Not hard at all but I sometimes forget even though I know I should take a look at it every time.

He is still lucky I guess as that trailer don't seem to be heavy. He's got some cranking to do though.

I always place pressure against the 5th wheel when parked. A little pull, set brakes and that's that.

Only had a fifth wheel failure once on the highway southbound 95 coming off the tydings in Maryland, It had a bad joint and flipped the empty off my Ford 9000 set it down on the bogie drive which held it there and saved lives.

Now that Western Dropout managed to do this, will he or she still have a landing gear that works?

If he was northbound he was probably on his way up to one of the Poland Spring bottling plants in either Poland Spring or Hollis Center. If he was on his way back from either one of those plants then he's screwed as those water loads were always heavy(Western Express is contractually obligated to haul up to 45,000 pounds). We got a message on the dispatch to not go into either plant with full fuel tanks and stick to the Qualcomm designated route(any deviation from the route would be picked up on surveillance cameras by the local police and would result in heavy fines).

Honest question.Wouldn't landing gear collapse or go thru trailer floor if he was heavy?
