I know of a large LTL carrier whom thought it would be a great idea to driver facing install artificial intelligence cameras in their trucks like the ones above. They piloted the program at a few locations with several different drivers. Every time a driver moved his head outside of an invisible box, they would get a violation.
Within a month, corporate HR was running their arses off to multiple locations to meet with drivers, who were threatening to begin the process of unionization to try and prevent this program from catching on... Needless to say, the company quickly back pedaled on the program.

Honestly, I was indifferent to driver facing cameras til you mentioned the legal stuff in your other post. That really opened up my eyes because I never thought of how devastating it is to the driver should an incident of any kind occur, and it may not actually be driver error. Drivers do get hung up on the privacy thing. You're absolutely right on that. The minute an accident or incident occurs, those companies will find a nitpicky reason to get after the driver. I think the fear of lawsuits has companies quick to get rid of drivers over minor things.

It certainly is a strange and ironic paradox between legalities and insurance controlling the carriers operations while the driver gets the short end of the stick (usually).

They could also be used to absolve themselves from paying unemployment compensation because they can nit-pick something they're doing (or not doing) behind the wheel that's against company policy.

In order to collect UE one must be unemployed due to no fault of their own. Breaking company rules is an automatic win for the company.

All you guys are whining about cameras when my company makes you install an app that locks your phone out when driving.
