It can be done without going to one of the mega carriers and being a slave. I wanted to drive truck but didn't want to go through that bs.
I got my start by renting a truck to take my cdl test. I then went on the wheat harvest as a truck driver to get some experience. Came home when that was done and found a local grain hauler that gave me a chance. I still work for him and split my time hauling grain and pulling a flat over the road and some locally when there is not grain to haul. I drive a loaded 07' 379 and have never went anywhere without being asked if I want to. Could not be happier.

Go look at what swift is paying flatbed drivers. I believe it is a whopping 2 cpm more than van. I didnt go to work for a mega carrier at first even though at one point I worked for CRST for 6 mos. I got my start at Sherman Bros trucking out of Oregon and did heavy haul (105,500 gross lbs) right away. with my trainer. I started at 28 cpm but with stop pays, load/unload pay, tarp pay, etc I wound up making 38 cpm just starting out. BTW I am not a company driver but definitely making 2.40 a mile
volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
you are right, i can only drive 13hr 45min every day max, which would come out to 825mi a day. So much for the 70hr, i'd burn that up in five days, which should be about 4,125mi and $1,443 gross, which is $20.62 an hr on a 70hr work week. But that's if i ran that hard the entire time.. i only do days like that two or three times a month. Maybe more if i plan on making a big purchase in the future. And i really dont spend much money on the road. My wife worked out my month to total just under $300, and $100 of that is stuff she bought at WalMart before i even left the apartment, the other $200 is obviously from when i eat at Dennys, which i try not to do, but sometimes i dont feel like cooking on the GF Grill.

Again with the math, WAY OFF! You can work up to 14 hrs a day BUT you CANNOT legally drive over 11 hrs each day.volvodriver01 and Logan76 Thank this.

After reading some post on here about how many miles some drivers think they can run legally, I am no longer surprised there is such a strong push for e-logs.
milskired, whoopNride, Mommas_money_maker and 4 others Thank this. -

Mommas_money_maker and volvodriver01 Thank this. -
Lots of guys brag what they can do and how often they do it......BS is what they're blowing most of the time
MJ1657, Mommas_money_maker, milskired and 1 other person Thank this. -
Actually guys he's right. If you drive 11 take 10 off that leaves 3 hours left accounting for 2 15minute pre trips in 24 hours you can actually drive 13.5 hours. The rules say nothing about 11 hours a day it states 11 hours in 14 hours with 10 off.
CAXPT Thanks this.
