No point in lying about it, there's plenty of other reasons/excuses.

OK, granted I haven't been on the road in 30 years and a lot of stuff has changed. But what is the justification for a shipper to take your keys? I accept sliding the tandems, inspecting the trailer and even removing the air hose, but taking your keys??? The only thing I can remember that would justify that is them making sure you can't leave after you've set at a dock for hours and still they haven't started loading you!

My company is huge, almost silly on all the safety steps. And I'm required to chock, glad hand lock, and turn truck off before entering the trailer. If its not I'm wrote up and/or possibly fired. Drivers are more than welcome to disconnect and pull forward if need to idle.

I would say that you made yourself look like an ###. You won't freeze to death sitting in your truck cab at +30 degrees. I don't even idle my truck at night in +30 degree weather. The original post said 30 degrees so I am assuming it is +30. Like DrtyDiesel said, I also keep a spare set of keys in my pocket and can lock my door with a remote. You may have wanted to politely ask if there was a driver lounge to wait while they load so you can stay warm, or ask how long it will take to load.

Sadly stupid seems to be a job requirement in this industry now.

If the company is truly concerned about safety, they could purchase a dock lock system. Glad hand locks work fine as well. I see no reason to try and take a driver's keys.

Gentlemanfarmer: Thank you for joining the conversation. Loved your advise .... but I'm a little confused. Is it proper for a "gentleman" to tell some one that they look like an #####, regardless of the reason that caused the aforementioned appearance. Maybe you should take your ball and glove and just scoot off back home. Maybe mommy will make you a peanut butter sandwich and put a band aid on your oversized ego to help reduce the swelling. Come back and play with us whenever you want !!!!
