Something needs to be changed these State Test sites are getting rich off this skills Test, from just plainly taking advantage of People, And The FMCSA needs to Investigate the corruption, First of all the State BMV could easily look at your driving record and see how much Experience you have, most companys do a 10 year background check, but they know that, I've personally drove for 37 yrs and have logged close to 4 million miles, have owned trucks, and at one point I worked as a CDL Instructor, in 2012 My elderly Mother became Very sick and her health took a turn for the worse, and she eventually ended up passing away, we'll needless to say, this took a great affect on me, more so than I would of Ever Imagine, and to top it off as luck would have right when everything was happening my physical came due, so with everything going on and stress running rampant, I turned in my cdl, now 3 yrs later, I have decided to go back to driving to be able to support my family better, and have taken the skills test 4 times, at 175.00 each time, and everytime fail, because i didn't say something exactly like it was in the book, like for instance, on the 4 pt brake check, I said from 90 lbs im going to build my pressure to a maximum of 140 pounds , he failed me because I didn't say I'm building my pressure to a range of 120 to 140 , another 175.00 gone over something so petty, they are making millions off just little nick picky things like this, its Ridiculous, its pure theft, I know a man who has drove a truck for 52 yrs has owned several trucks and a spotless driving record, he had a heart attack had to go through recertification , went through everything just fine , then the instructor that was testing him told him, he failed the driving test because he wasn't 1 to 4 foot from the curb on a couple of turns and he wasn't doing it right, keep in mind this man has driven 52 yrs accident free, and he's doing it wrong ? This Skills test is nothing more than a money pit for the schools or test sites, and the states are sure making their cut as well, and removing experienced Drivers in the Process. ..this is a Total Disgrace to the entire trucking Industry. As well as a major hit to incomes of American Family's everywhere. .

This is where the industry is headed to free up the calendar at the dmv test site so people don't have to wait 6+ weeks to do the skills test because people fail it for free and waste the states time on multiple occasions.
Community College I'm at with a training program doesn't have it set up yet. However there's been talk that if you already have your permit and want to test out its 300.00 first time and 100 anytime after.
Instructors already informed us that you cant mess anything up with the airbrakes portion otherwise its an automatic failure.mrhoss Thanks this. -
Welcome...when last year I was failed 3 times on skill test - touching the white line, not touching the white line, truck was not is perfect straight position within the lines - and after that the testing person said I need to go thru CDL school just to pay some money, I was called incompetent, person who can not drive and more like this...Welcome....
mrhoss Thanks this. -
I still help train bus drivers part time, and they have to repeat the air brake portion and pretrip verbatim or they fail. Wasn't this way a few years ago.... Luckily we have multiple testing centers in the metro, I have the 3 standard testing routes memorized

Following these strict guidelines, 9 out of 10 current truckers would fail to re-certify their CDL.

[QUOTE="scottied67, I've taken the skills test 4 stinking times, this last time On the 4 point brake check, I said from 90psi I'm building my pressure to a maximum of 140 psi to where the governor will cut out, ...He tells me I should of said I'm building my pressure to a range of 120 to 140 , the Instructor before him told me as long as I said the max at 140 i was fine , so I studied it like so and failed it , after I did it the way they said to, its a money pit, no wonder they are so booked up, I spoke with a guy from the Bmv he said that's the way its setup , they are making millions off the skills test in Indiana its a 175.00 a pop , and they fail you over petty bs, last test guy failed me because I mentioned the saftey tape down the sides but not on the rear, i figured once I checked it i was done but you have to repete the same thing over and over again ...

140 PSI? What truck builds pressure to 140 PSI?
Governor cut in and cut out ranges are 100 PSI for the cut in and 125 for the cut out.
The brake check requires 100% correctness to pass. If you are stating 140 PSI on your governor cut out you failed......dont blame the examiner.
Secondly, making millions? Lets assume that $175.00 was pure profit. Lets assume they didnt have to pay payroll for the examiners and insurance, workmans comp, maintenance for the facility....none of that. Lets assume that whomever is running the facility gets to put $175.00 in their greedy little pocket every single time they test someone.
In order to make millions of dollars....millions as in more than one million, plural.......they would have to test around 12000 people a year, or about 33 people a day.
Do you honestly think that any testing facility is actually testing that many people a day?
More likely they are testing 10 to 12 people a day maximum. Expenses such as payroll eat up 75% of that or more. Unless of course you are the only one entitled to get a paycheck?
Instead of hyperbole and drama it would probably be better to just study your pre-trip a little better and make sure that you get it 100% correct.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
this makes me sad.....
Let's turn this into a win for you. Where do you live? I just did my test in WA and I have my papers that will help.... Maybe someone in your state can HELP you with the study guide they used to pass in your state.
Then study that. Good luck! -
x1Heavy Thanks this.
