It's not necessarily about the drivers.

Say the load contract states the reefer must be set at 10 degrees and must not vary more than 5 degrees above or below while in transit or the carrier has penalties up to the full cost of the load. Shipper knows they have bad product and 'mistakenly put the wrong temperature' on the BOL. It gives the shipper a way to try to cargo claim the load. Admittedly, not a great way but enough to at least avoid the ire of their customer for shipping known defective product and probably good enough to avoid paying the shipping costs. Having the computer force a human override can give CS a chance to call the customer long before the load gets rejected and can avoid a lot of problems.

Or the contract says 10 degrees, but the BOL says -10 degrees. There was a thread not to long ago about a driver who refused to load over this, and several experienced hands said the difference in fuel used wasn't significant on one load. But if Shaffer is taking 10 loads a day out of that facility and 40% end up being -10 degrees that's a significant cost. Shaffer might go back to the customer and ask for more money, or just save that knowledge for when the rebid comes. There are a lot of little problems like this that the front line workers (driver and office) just solve and move on, but higher ups never get an accurate idea of the scope of the problem. Therefore the problems continue, wasting time and causing undue aggravation.

Or they've dealt with enough drivers that have 'malleable memories' that conveniently always make them right and the office wrong. Like a certain driver who recently claimed he left a certain company over maintenance issues, not dispatch problems - then two days later stated that his ongoing problems with dispatch are why he left the last time. Or a certain driver who misread the appointment time. Polices and rules are set for the lowest common denominator.

If it's any consolation I picked up a nearly brand new Crete trailer that is completely missing a abs light but I'm not wasting hours to get one besides the wire is cut so apparently someone cut it to avoid having to check it lol......ah well they usually malfunction anyway

Something like that 10 but actually -10 I could see someone just having a brain fart and forgetting to put the negative in the load info or whatever.

Yeah, it could be a simple mistake. But whose mistake is it and who will end up footing the bill?

The mistake could be on the driver, it could be on the clerk, it could be on the carrier. The important thing is the mistake is identified and corrected. Imagine a load that's supposed to be kept at 40 degrees, but the clerk mistypes 4 instead. That's an expensive mistake. Shaffer has built a policy to cover themselves. It may be annoying, but it's very understandable.

Yeah, I've had a few loads where the bills say something different than load info, message in and they confirm its supposed to be what's in the load info. Fun ones are where load info says one thing, bills say another, then the reefer was set to a third. Usually reefer was just set for loading and they didnt change the temp. Idk if setting it to -20 for a load that needs to be kept at like 0 actually helps cool faster or anything though

He must be a graduate of the Ray Charles Tarping Academy. I think some of these guys think to themselves "ya know, I suck at tarping, so why try*...not that I am a tarping whiz, but dang.

the worst one I had was a 50° difference. Precool to -15 before loading, set to -10 after being loaded, then the customer wanted 35° continuous.
