Yes, but if you have two trucks but only one load, with all other things equal, the driver getting paid less will get the load while the higher oaid driver sits, thus the company profits more.

You're assuming the planners know how much the drivers make. Sure maybe some mom and pop place with 5 trucks, but something the size of crete, they're not tracking that. It's a difference of maybe $100 on a 1000mi + load. And that's if it's a newbie vs 10yr vet. You could also look at it as the higher paid driver is more likely to make otd and less likely to tear equipment up. Again this is assuming the planners actually know or care about any of this

 

I don't agree with the thinking, but the logic is there. It's a simple matter of a couple of lines of code to calculate the cost to pay thr driver in. Thus driver A looks more efficient to the planner than driver B.

 

It happens more than folks want to believe it too..

 

I get the logic but any profit could easily be lost by driver B sitting. It may happen but only extremely rare cases, the stars would have to align perfectly to make it worthwhile. If tom and chuck both deliver at the same place at the same time, with the same hours, same fuel level, but tom makes 5cpm less than chuck, then yes, it might be worthwhile to give him the load. I think we're both giving the planners wayyy to much credit though. What I think is more plausible is keeping the higher paid driver where there's less deadhead, more high paying loads, less downtime etc. Ie the east coast.

 

If that’s the case, then why do they pay .72mi on western region shaffer side??..

 

To compensate for all the winter weather closures? Idk I think I heard they're shutting either western regional or the Dallas-socal/Phoenix loop down. Not enough freight.
