The Union didn't hire Bill Zollars who decided to buy Roadway and numerous regional carriers on credit with no real plan to integrate them effectively. The Union didn't get caught for over-charging the DoD for decades. The Union didn't amass $1B in debt due to poor management, poor OR and low morale.

Now, the Teamsters are far from perfect, but to lay so much blame at their feet is foolish. Both parties signed a contract and YRC knew exactly what they had signed.

They would have to eliminate the concept of piece work.

In the simplest of legal terms, otr truck drivers are paid by the piece.

Could you imagine the lines at the fuel pumps with drivers milking the clock if we were all paid hourly

    Lol! So true.

I personally take pride in not being paid by the hour. I like getting paid by the piece.

The unions didn't close departments or plants because they don't make company business decisions. What do you expect them to do?

I disagree. Hourly is the way to go.

It was the union that caused the high labor costs along with forcing the company to increase their contributions to benefits that contributed to their downfall. Those weren't the only thing that caused it, but it was a major part of it. The products that the plants made were then added to other plants production lines in other countries and other parts of this country with lower operating costs (which included more affordable labor costs).

For some parts of this industry, yes hourly is a good fit. But industry wide, if you made everything hourly you would have a large portion of the trucking workforce become dairy farmers milking the clock like it was a 10 utter cow
