A good mechanic is as rare as a good driver these days...

We all seem to be forgetting that there are no more mechanics, they are now called technicians thus if the computer doesn't tell them what is wrong they can't fix it. I have 2 real mechanics in my shop who are cousins and can fix just about anything but they grew up in Mexico so they were forced to learn how to fix crap with what they had available. Welcome to the new order of trucking. Good Luck SSB I feel your pain.

I came to the trucking world after 20+years at car dealerships. I’ve been shocked by the lack of good mechanics/technicians at truck repair facilities.

May I emphasize how much of a hate I have developed for Freightliners!!!!! Batteries appear to have been checked, but not changed...however, now I have to wait until tomorrow because the carrier bearing is going bad, at 210,000 miles. What kind of junk are they building these days. The FLD I owned years ago had more than 700k on the clock before I replaced one of those, along with the U-joints on either end of the main drive shaft...and this isn't something that is company specific unless you upgrade from the standard to heavy duty...in my opinion, they can stop calling these Freight-shakers and start calling them Junk-liners...

Stay strong, I am on my third set of batteries in a new truck and ended up replacing the clutch at 350K.

Trucks are now produced solely for the mega’s and it’s about how many and uptime over an entire fleet, it’s sad.

Hopefully they get you up and rolling soon.

I feel lucky to work out of our KY yard where a former bed bugger turned lead mechanic runs things. So much more common sense and logical problem solving, I’m hoping the two young mechanics who work under him learn something.

Don’t get me wrong, you need to understand how the computer controls the truck, but don’t skip out on understanding how to turn a wrench...

My new Volvo is on its third set of batteries. My last new Volvo had more electrical problems then a Texas electric company. My one and only Freightliner I got here brand new in 2014 with 189 miles on the clock lost nuts and bolts going down the road the minute I drove out the gate, I gave it back 3 months later for a KW that couldn’t keep an airbag on it. You’re right, it’s all truck manufacturers. What’s funny is during my cross country travels, at least once a week I see a set of new trucks for delivery broke down on the side of the road. Hell last week, I saw a set of new Volvo’s getting hooked on the side of 80 in Wyoming.

It's not really the batteries I am concerned with. 2 years on regular batteries that power an inverter in a truck with opti-idle isn't bad. It a major bearing on a driveline of a class 8 truck that is failing with only 210k miles that pisses me off.
