Interesting. I've never heard of this tare weight.

Kind of unrelated, but am I supposed to have my brakes released when I scale? I never considered this but I always have my brakes engaged when I scale.

The directions on the scale read to release the brakes, and what happens when you don't is the axle weights tend to be thrown off. If I think of the thread this was discussed in, I'll try to post the link.

You shouldn't set the tractor and the trailer together. Also, if the rig will sit without rolling and no brakes applied, it probably won't matter to set the brakes at that time.

The scales should be almost perfectly level, so . . . once you're on there and the load stops moving, the plates in the scale settle down - you should be able to comfortably open the door and lean out and chat up the girl at the fuel desk.

I don't understand WHY the brakes make a difference, but they do - the scales at the yard for the doubles show it every time.

That's uncalled for. There's no way you can apply logic, science, measurements and intelligence to this topic. We'll simply rely on our old fashioned ways . . . . and burn some witches while we're at it. :biggrin_25514:

The CAT SCALE will still work with snow on it and give you a accurate weight.
The scale will factor in the weight of the snow to give you the correct weight.
The biggest problem that causes the scale not to weigh accurately is drivers
adjusting the tandems while truck is still on the scale or drivers driving across
the scale at a high rate of speed. This does cause the scale to not be accurate.

Yeah, I'm curious about this. Now that I think about it and it was mentioned, it does say to release the brakes. And thinking about it more, on the CAT scales I think I usually have my brakes pulled because I'm almost stepping out of the truck to hit the call button but on the shipper's scales I usually don't have them pulled because I'm still sitting in the truck. There are some things that I do just out of repetition without thinking. I'm going to have to check myself on this and see what I'm doing. Also, next time I'm at a shipper and don't have anyone waiting on me (and I don't have to pay $10.50 to experiment) I'm going to scale the axles with the brakes released and engaged and see what difference it makes.

I've noticed the weight is higher with the brakes set - so at least it's not the other way round.

You're right - there's some things you do out of habit and never consider.

That's right. I guess if I'm doing it wrong at the CAT scale it's in my favor then. I rarely ever trust a shipper's scales anyway using it more as an estimate.

some trailers dump the bags when the brakes are set.

when the bags lower the suspension rides forward pushing against the tractor.
