I have seen these at various truck stops, but never in regular gas stations..I just have a feeling "Tire Checker" is synonymous with " Bludgeoning Device " haha.. So if this is indeed the case, is it like an inside joke between truckers or is it REALLY intended for use as a "Tire Checker"? Just always wondered...
So guys, what is a "tire checker" really mainly used for ;)

yes, people thump their tires with them.

No idea,
never had one.
I used a hammer,
or a tire pressure gauge.Colorato Thanks this. -
I use a bud wrench that my grandfather had in his tool box. Back in the day we used to change a flat yourself by hand. No it isn't an inside joke they are used to thump or hit the tire to check to make sure it isn't real low on air. No it won't tell you when your 5# low but it will tell you if it is 20 or more low or flat

I use my winch bar since I'm also checking straps.

I knew an old midget truck driver that used one as a cane. If you pissed him off he would bust you in the knee caps!

The answer is, yes we check the tires by thumping them. You will hear a low tire. When the tires are cold you should use a gauge, but at a fuel or meal stop its much quicker to thump them.

i hit my tire with a plastic hammer and i know exactly if i am down a pound or two lol

I used to use mine to check tires... Now I do the trusty old kick test. Prolly not a good idea.
