Tested out and recieved the CDL this week from a school - lost a little enthusiasm to do the otr - but not having tested the waters makes me undecided on tossing in the towel for an alternative...

    My thoughts-

I thought the shifting was a pain in the butt 5 shifts to go 30 miles an hour, and non-synch is pretty archaic imo...yeah, yeah and so u got the automatic companys... That is nt the whole ball of wax with the otr because I also dont feel much like risking the shiny cdl with fmcsa hos restrictions on making $, and inspection deficiency's cropping up and csa point games, while trying to run 500miles a day to make 150$ (less than what i made before chasing this venue of interest) even if that is possible @.30prmile rookie rate... Also concerns of the wheels not turning enough with maintenance and waiting for p/u and delivery as the hos hours tick off the $ making...

I have nt been out on the road but if I am even coming close to what this entails I would like to get an honest assessment...

Hoop jumping, or making money??? Whats the verdict!?

I cant see why falling back on applying the cdl to a utility vehicle and occupation under the 100 mile air rule and avoiding the logging and assortment of clearance, traffic, and other elements infringing on bringing home the bacon as an alternative...

    What say someones view?

Trucking is a go all the way thing, or don't go at all. It seems after reading your story that you should not go into trucking.

I would recommend you try taking cymbalta or some other good anti-depression drug. Start out with 30mg three times a week and then move up to 60mg daily. If that doesn't help electroshock.

At least 1 year OTR is the next step in the learning process.
It's like an internship, to prove you can do it.
It's your final test to prove you are a rookie driver.
Otherwise you just wasted all your efforts up until now.

    Well, thanks for the input...

I dont feel obtaining the CDL and experiencing some rig driving was a waste of time... I was wise enough to foot the bill for school on my own from following my past instincts in money making, so maybe remaining available to the possibility of a more lucrative driving opportunity- may be a wiser decision???

    Will see...

Shifting is the least of your worries. Most time OTR is spent at top speed anyway... get to gear and drive. You living in a small town speed trap I can see why that is a concern though.

As someone else said, it's an all in kind of job. If you are not prepared to devote the next year to learnng how to drve a truck, this probably is not for you. This itis the hardest park dor some rookies to understand... so far you have learned how to get your cdl... you still have to learn to drive a truck.
