Can you begin a split break by taking a 2 hour break, or should the 8 hour portion of your split break be taken first?

I was told by my company that you have to take 8 first. I don't use the split myself so I'm not keen on the issue.

I don't recall there being a rule about whether you need to take the 8 or 2 first. You just need to be careful to not go over your 11 total driving time before taking your entire 10 hour break. I do split sleeper berth sometimes and sometimes use the 2 hour break first. I have never had a problem doing this when my logs have been checked. I am very mindful of not going over my legal driving time before taking the entire 10 hour break.

Doesn't matter if you use the 2 or 8 first. It's *easier* to use the 2 first (split your 11 hours driving time around a 2 hour break during your 14). Then you only need 8 hours in the sleeper to finish the 10. But you have to add up your hours since after the 2 hour break, subtract from 11 and that's the max you can drive before taking a 2 hour again.

8 hours first, split driving time, take 8 hours off in sleeper. Go to end of your original 14 hour break- count over 8 hours now that's the end of your 14 now. Just be careful, double check everything to ensure you don't go over 11, don't go over 14 of course don't go over 70.

The problem I have always seen with split breaking as it is now ...is that it's harder to get back to a normal cycle and that even most logs departments don't understand how to split properly.

The way I look at it is if I have to take 8 hours off anyway why not go the full 10 in one shot and not worry about it. but each situation is different and no two drivers are alike in that respect.

Comes in handy sometimes like this scenario:

Drove about 4 hours to consignee to finish this load at 0900, emptied out about 1000. Got a preplan to go pickup next load at 1800. Might as well put that 8 hours to good use otherwise my 14 was going to end at 1900 anyway. By splitting it, I was able to knock off about 7 hours driving by after midnight and take 2 more hours and hit it again for 4 more. At that time I can take 8 or 10 off now. It's a great time management tool.

Agreed there were times I used it also when I drove for Celadon but after getting on with a smaller company it made no sense for me to use it anymore.

But yes you are correct that there are times
