Werner had etrainer on split breaks that confused the hell out of me and I thought you had to take a 10 sleeper/off to get 14 back. So can you do that 8 sleeper and 2 off/sleeper or whatever it was?
Split breaks legal?

joesmoothdog and nax Thank this. -
Specifically, drivers of property-carrying commercial motor vehicles may accumulate the equivalent of 10 consecutive hours off duty by taking two periods of rest, provided that:
- One of the periods is at least 8 consecutive hours in a sleeper berth;
- The remaining 2 hours (taken either before or after the 8-hour period) is spent either off duty, in a sleeper berth, or any combination of the two;
- Driving time in the period immediately before and after each rest period, when added together, does not exceed 11 hours; and
- Compliance with the 14-hour rule is calculated from the end of the first of the two qualifying rest periods.
Drivers of passenger-carrying vehicles may split their required 8-hour rest period into two separate periods, provided that:
- The two rest periods are spent entirely in a sleeper berth;
- Neither period is less than 2 hours;
- Driving time in the period immediately before and after each rest period, when added together, does not exceed 10 hours; and
- The on-duty time in the period immediately before and after each rest period, when added together, does not include any driving after the 15th hour.

Yes split break provision is perfectly legal, I use it all the time.

Of course it's legal. Whether your carrier allows you to use it or not is a different story though.
tscottme Thanks this. -
The split sleep is legal but I only recommend using it if you know for sure you're going to park for 10 hrs once you get to your destination. I use it if I'm trying to get home. I believe if you park for 8, why not just go ahead and get the ten

Yes, split-sleeper is legal.
You don't get 14 back when doing a split. You only get the hours of your 11/14 that were unused prior to whichever part of your 8/2 split you did before this one. In simple terms, when your sleeper berth is split; so is your 11/14 until you take a full 10 (or reset).Last edited: Mar 10, 2018

Just keep in mind that while lefal, qualcomm doesn't allow 2/8 split, only 8/2. It's just not in the programming. So don't take a 2 hr break thinking it'll do anything for you unless you did 8 in the sleeper already.
Justrucking2 Thanks this. -
Brickwall Thanks this.
