Drivers, I've found a couple of awesome reasons to split my 10hr break. Last night I was in a bad place, the Petro south of Harrisburg, PA. I didn't get in 'til 21:15, but didn't want to wait 'til 07:15 to start driving in rush hour. So I split the break, 8hrs in sleeper, took off. I an now in the Flying J in Wycheville, VA, shower, meal, change of pace, and in another 45min I'll hit the road with the rest of my drive and 14hour clocks back to full, minus the hours I used so far today.

I got my 30 minute break in at the same time!!! So, instead of using another 30min break and screwing up my trip plan, I include the 30min break in my 2hr off duty from splitting my break. So now, I don't lose that half hour, and the 2hrs left to fulfill on my 10hr break are really only 1 1/2 hours! I am stoked. So far.

Tomorrow, I'll split again, and use the 2hrs catchup on my 10hr clock to stop at a WalMart, shop for groceries, and maybe hit a Chrome Shop. I can drive line 5 and still satisfy the off duty 2hrs. That 2hrs catchup can be off duty, sleeper, or off/driving, but it must be continuous.

So many comments I've heard don't like the split, and I bought into that, probably out of fear or something dumb. I tried it, and I like, a lot. So far. I really like not adding that 30min to my trip plan. My plan doesn't change now because I'd have to sit that 2hrs anyway, but now I can include the 30min break. Love that. So far.

I put this thread here because I didn't know where else to put it.

I think if you are under dispatch or 'laden' you may not use Line 5 at all.

    That's a Swift thing.

If an o/o drops his trailer at a truckstop, he may bobtail on line 5 (driving, not on-duty) for short distances for personal reasons. It's perfectly legal.

Paper logs would just be Line 1.

As for the 8 hour you did last night... query:

Did you do a break of at least two hours the previous day? Otherwise, you may have violated your 11 and 14 hour rules.

Your 8 hour sleeper time means your 11/14 clocks START when you last did finished a break of AT LEAST 2 hours prior to the 8 hour, and continue until either your 11 hours are up from the end of that 2 hour break, until they're exhausted OR your 14 hour clock now became a 22 hour clock (14 + 8 hour sleeper) and has expired.

For instance, if you didn't have a break of at least 2 hours yesterday, your 11/14 starts when your 10-hour reset ended yesterday morning. It ran until you shut down. Your eight hour paused both your 11 and 14. When you started up this morning, you can only drive the remaining portions of those clocks, at which point the only way to continue is to do two consecutive hours Lines 1 or 2 (Line 5 technically doesn't exist, it's Line 1, to the DOT).

If you did do a break yesterday (say from 3pm to 5pm, and you drove non-stop to 915pm), then you only had from 515am to drive 6h45m and had 9h45m to do it in before requiring a break of at least two hours.

Also, remember, the two hour break DOES NOT extend your clock, Only the 8-hour sleeper can do that (and it is simply pausing your time from break of at least two hours until next break of at least two hours).

To sum it up easily: you're running two 11/14 clocks. One starts the moment you come out of your eight-hour (it runs 14 straight hours, and allows up to 11 hours driving), the other goes from the last break of two hours prior to the leaving the 8-sleeper, and ends 22 hours later (because the 8 paused it), and still only gives you 11 hours driving.

Another thing to remember: if you take more than 8 hours in the sleeper, but less than ten, the last eight hours is counted as your eight hour. If you spend 9 hours in the sleeper, that extra hour has cut into your available time from the previous 2 to the next 2. You didn't get a sudden 23-hour clock.

Semi good for you, you just stepped up a notch and it'll help you in a jam.

Usually that's what's its used for. When your in a tight spot, and haft to run. Almost always right.

    Good luck and drive safe.

    snowwy;3463630]i don't have a line 5.

Some companies don't use it for the company drivers...they don't want their drivers running around in company equipment. I know Swift for sure doesn't have Line 5. Conway allows company drivers one hour on line 5. Owners can run line 5 and be off duty, as TruckerPete mentioned earlier. You have to bobtail, no dispatch or load, in other words, not engaged in commercial activity.
