Just found out today that I start my training next Tuesday. The phone call made my week! Giving up being a paramedic after almost 16 years. Looking forward to the change, and my family has been really supportive. Of course my kids are fascinated that their dad will be driving a truck. Any advice for a newbie?

16 years of dealing with other peoples misery and pain wears on you after a while. It's a job that's primarily focused on other peoples bad days. It's hard to keep their bad days from affecting my good ones on my days off. The hours were lousy (24 hour shifts that typically turned into 36's since we are always short people), and I know that the hours trucking are bad too, but I'm not going to be expected to drive and render care to someone dying after being awake running calls for 35 hours straight.

Just like everyone else, Pay attention!!! Observe, ask questions, and LISTEN. Never be afraid to ask questions.

Always be early. Remember its a job interview for the next several months. treat it as such and you will be ok

Congrats on your decision. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to make it. With your background you will do just fine. Read up on some of the other threads here and you will be ahead of the game.

Just got back from the Kansas DMV with CDL permit in hand with a few endorsements. Studying apparently pays off. Hardest part was not laughing at the guy next to me having a mental breakdown and cussing out the computer.

I just happened to be taking my CDL test with the sound of a frustrated young girl going for her first learner's permit huffing and getting upset about the questions on the computer, it was a good laugh; helped break the tension of taking my test.

I'll be joining you for Orientation on the 24th, best of luck to you!
