Oh, and while I have had to do blind-side backs a time or three, they are very rare. In almost every situation I've encountered in which a blind-side back looked necessary, I was able to turn it into a clear-side back instead, just by changing my approach. "Minimize the Risk."
On those rare occasions when I DO have to blind-side back, I take my time and GOAL as often as necessary. No biggie. Yes, the first one was stressful. The second one less so. I still avoid them like the plague because they are inherently dangerous. -
I am glad ya'll have water spickets in them there commodes. (working on my southern to get a free beer from a marshfield yokell)
You missed the point. I didn't ask if you could blindside back in. I asked if they were training students to blindside back in, as part of the wonderful training they receive at the roehl school.
I had a chance to run thru marshfield and looked at a students curiculum and yes it is on there as a demo, along with parallel parking. So according to evolutions statement this is not being done because of the condensed training course.
Now lemme scratch this noggen. which would be better. I'll type slowly.
#1: let em practice in the saftey of an empty yard with some schneider eggs
or
#2: Let em practice at an east coast truck stop at around 18:00 hrs between a peterbuilt and a telephone pole.
Congrats students of week 12 of the year 2008 in your honor may we bestow upon you your first #2

Yea, the area I live in has more freight for flats then vans. Plus the added exercise will help me keep in shap. -
Just a quick update: Got on the road with my trainer a couple days ago and been doing great since. Picked up a load out of Georgia and head to Texas with it. Best of luck to the rest of the guys from my class and the classes to come.

Make no mistake: RDTC's only real purpose is to teach students enough to pass their CDL test. The course is less than three weeks of actual instruction, often with three students sharing a single truck and having to split driving time. But the simple fact is that during that three weeks, with the current program, students have enough to do learning what they are currently being taught, without introducing other elements.
I have had to teach myself blind-side backing, and am not nearly comfortable enough with it. I am still learning parallel parking, with which I am also far from comfortable or proficient. But I don't think teaching these in the basic course is the way forward. Personally, I would like to see RDTC bring drivers in for a day or three once a quarter or so, and teach these techniques to "experienced" drivers. ALL drivers. If you work for Roehl, you will come in two to four times per year for advanced instruction. My opinion on the matter, anyway. -
I would have loved to do some BLIND-side backing in my class, and it was 7 weeks long!
Darn good opinion. It might even be a good suggestion for all companys to do something like this for all employee's. I know some company's I have seen have safety meeting's (for bonus's), and that would be a good time to do it.Of course I am not a driver there yet, but I am hoping!!!
