I took my Illinois Pretrip Inspection test and failed because I didnt know what a static leak test, the examiner said it was in the IL manual and when I showed her the manual it wasnt in there as static leak as she claimed. Do anybody know what a static leak test is? Its when you pump 3 times pedal and hold for a minute, and fan out air til buzzer and knobs pop out. It states in manual that the test has to be performed but when I was attempting to do what I thought a static leak test was which is Air Leak Test she prevented me from doing it to show her I knew how to test for Air Leak
Static Leak Test?

I believe its when you put the truck in gear release brakes and see if it loses pressure.
-
don't know about IL, but in NC we learned the pre-trip includes
1) starting the engine, waiting until air builds up
2) putting truck in gear, shutting off engine, turn key back on (but not start start)
3) push in both valves
4) after system charges (listen for air, including out the window)... do these next two things
4a) watch guages. air pressure (stored) should not drop more than 3 psi in 1 minute
4b) engage foot brake. watch guages. air pressure should not drop more than 4 psi in one minute.
5) fan brake pedal to release air from system. around 20 psi both buttons should pop out.
6) put in neutral, start engine. pressure should climb to 85 to 100 psi within 45 seconds.
7) perform 3 pull tests (red button, yellow button, hand valve)
8) perform 5 mph brake test with brake pedal.
i would think that #4a would be the "static leak test." and therefore, i would call 4b the "dynamic leak test."
edit: i found this video (from an ILLINOIS school) that confirms and demonstrates the static test.

CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
also what you were doing by fanning was seeing when the air loss buzzard comes on and when the emergency brakes engage(thats when buttons pop out) as 101driver said..#4 was what you should,ve done. testers won,t show or how to do it..they,ll just tell you to do it

Static leak test is where you check the leakage over a period of time. I believe it is 3 lbs for a straight truck and 5 lbs for a tractor trailer. I dont remember the exact time length.

101 has it. I kind of do it in a different order but it doesn't matter as long as it's all done.
I have an IL manual. It's on page 78, second from the bottom. I think the lady confused you when she said "static". Now you know.
The way you normally do all your brake test side by side is.....
Do your pretrip walk around with keys in your pocket.
Chock your wheels
Get in the truck and do your inside pretrip.
Your brake test can be done in different orders depending if the tanks are already full or not. Usually they are full.
First, air brake check with air built up, shut engine off. Full foot pressure on brake the air shouldn't drop more than 3 psi in one minute a straight truck and 4 psi in one minte in a combination vehicle.
Then you check the warning buzzer, engine off, key on, buttons in, pump brakes and the buzzer should come on at 60 psi. Continue pumping and the buttons should pop between 20-40 psi.
Then foot off the brake start the engine. Time the air pressure increase between 85 to 100psi. It must make it in 45 seconds.
Then air compressor cut out should happen between 100-125 psi.
Then shut the truck off again and time for (static) air leak test, buttons in, no foot on brake, after first intial air drop from pushing buttons in, air should drop no more than 2 psi in one minute in a straight truck or 3 psi in one minute in combination vehicle.
Then do your pull test and 5 mph test.
Time for road test! -
12 step =4 point
Air brake check test
* Before go inside the truck, explain to the inspector that you will perform an airbrake test and you need to chocks the wheel down.
Always go in and out of your truck facing to the cabin to the driver seat; never go out facing the street.
Explain to the inspector all step
Here is the 4 point brake check test procedure as follows:
· Step 1. Put your seat belt on. Ask the inspector to do so.
· Step 2. Safe start vehicle (wheel chocks down*, brakes set and vehicle in neutral), and build up air to operating pressure if needed. Until the governor cut off about 125 PSI
· Step 3. Select first gear, with Turn engine off, release the clutch, turn ignition switch back to the on position until computer clear the warning light (but don't start the truck), Push to release parking and trailer brakes, static test for leaks (check for air loss without applying any brakes) no more than 2 psi straight truck or 3 psi combination vehicle in 1 min. (60 sec).
· Step 4. Press and hold foot pedal, (90 psi) pedal pressure check that no more than 3 psi straight truck or 4 psi combination vehicle loss in your air pressure gauge in 1 min (60 sec).
· Step 5. Pump down the brake pedal to check that the air warning light and the buzzer devise come on by 60 psi.
· Step 6. After that. Continue to pump down the brake pedal, check that the tractor and trailer protection valve pops out by 20 psi. Which will automatic apply tractor / trailer parking brake.
· Remove the wheel chocks.
· Step 7. Then put truck in neutral and start vehicle, we want to see how fast it takes for the air pressure to build back up. Check that air builds from 85 psi to 100 psi in 45 seconds, and then continue to build air till air governor blows at approx. 125-130 psi the air gauge will stop building pressure at this point.
· Step 8. Continue with the brake check, release tractor brake, and pull against trailer brake (Trolley brake).
· Step 9. Set tractor brake, release trailer brake place truck in first gear and slightly release clutch to test tractor parking brakes.
· Step 10. Release parking brakes, pull forward 5 mph hands above (but not touching) steering wheel apply foot brake, check for brakes pulling to left or right.
· Step 11. Drive forward again 5 mph apply trailer hand valve (Trolley Brake Handle) to test trailer service brakes.
· Step 12. Set parking brakes build to system to operating pressure prior to driving away.
· * Before go inside the truck, explain to the inspector that you will perform a airbrake test and you need to chocks the wheel down. -
There is Static Brake and Applied Brake each one minute.
Static is build air pressure to air compressor cut out which you will know when the air dryer spits. At this point put truck in LO gear and shut the truck down, clutch in of course. Turn key to On position and release air brakes. Timer for one minute watching air gauges, should not drop more than x amount of psi in the one minute.
Applied is same, build air pressure do all procedures above but put your foot on service brake and press hard for the one minute. -
Here is a good video explaining it.
I got my CDL without going to a school and followed the steps in this video exactly and passed.
