I gotta tell ya - as a (hopefully) soon to be driver - I think I'm going to look into asset protection!!
People will sue you for ANYTHING these days.
I would hate to get into an accident that caused any kind of injury - much less a fatality - but either way, it's sure to cost me my job - but it's not worth losing my home on top of it!
Have you done anything to protect your assets?
Did you transfer everything into your significant other's name?
Did you talk to a lawyer about it?
I'm thinking about doing all of the above.

Any/every driver who has anything of value should put together a will at the very least, and don't put it off. As far as personal liability insurance that's a good question. I suppose there is some insurance company somewhere who sells a policy directed to company drivers, but I've not heard of a lawyer coming after a company driver personally, who was potentially responsible for a death or serious injury to others, but I don't doubt it has been attempted and perhaps successful. But that being said. If such insurance ever becomes widely available, be sure law suits where individual drivers are named as defendants will skyrocket overnight.
But the typical insurance that is available that pays or reimburses costs in the event you can no longer work due to illness or injury is so limited it would not help much if you in turn became unemployable as a driver due to an at-fault accident. -
Don't have anything anybody else would want and you don't have to worry about somebody suing you to take it. If you have anything of value, the lawyers will find a way to get it...doesn't matter if it is in the wife's name. If you paid for it, and especially in a community property state, that asset is fair game.
The best asset protection is to pay attention to what you are doing. Obey the speed limit. Obey the rules of the road. Don't tailgate. Drive defensively. Don't allow yourself to be distracted. Keep your log book and other paperwork in order and up to date. Don't run overweight. Most of all, avoid causing a wreck. If you didn't do anything wrong, and you weren't at fault, you aren't going to be held responsible to pay for the damages, and your assets will be safe. Better yet, avoid being involved in a wreck in the first place...then there are no damages to have to worry about.
