Don't feel that your son is being singled out.
I had similar experiences my first year with Schneider (aka, the "Big Orange").
Starter or beginning driver fleets aren't well known for being the most hospitable CDL employment environments.
The way to be successful is to get in AT LEAST A YEAR at your "starter" carrier of choice...then move on to a better fleet.
Truck driving is a VERY GOOD WAY for a young man to pick up some maturity, among other things.
Successful trucking requires/instills:
In hindsight -- I'm glad I stuck around. It delivers/produces some skill sets that I think will always be in demand.
- A stout work ethic (even for dry van or reefer duty)
- Independent thinking/decision making
- Being in charge of A LOT of responsibility
- Moral fortitude (doing the right thing -- even when no one else is watching)
- The satisfaction that comes from accomplishing something difficult -- that many other people can't -- or won't -- do
- Perseverance ("I can see why many people would quit this job"
)
Suggestion: Going forward -- stay put, & tough it out (why? see the above list); the job market (CDL, or not) stinks out loud right now.
After a year plus ....look for better opportunities in the CDL world.
For his next employer -- look for carriers that do more than just one type of freight (i.e., no "one-trick ponies").
