My plan is to start school at Davidson community collage to take the 2 month course starting in august. However I am wondering how my lack of employment history will work out in trying to find a job.
I am 23 and since I was 16 I worked an under the table cash paying job for a friend of mine. This is the only job I have had other than the farm I worked on when I was 15 and 16 which was also under the table. Yes I was young and dumb and didn't think about the future because the money was good.
Now I am wondering how hard will it be with no proof of employment history to get on with a company after school. My record is clean and only have 2 seat belt tickets from 3 yrs ago. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Since you're going to a private school, no problem finding a company to hire you. You will be asked for employment history for the last 3 years only. Once you're in classes, get back on here & we will help you find a job. You may not need help though.

Thank you for the info. Also I got your PM but cant reply do to not having the required 7 post. I will look into getting the passport and endorsements. I have actually studied for the CDL test since last summer when I had planned to go to school but got stuck replacing a cracked head on my truck instead.
Also do most companies require you to start out with a trainer if you are a new driver? Its one of the things I would like to skip over doing but if need be I can suck it up and do the time needed. And if so how long do they usually keep you on with a trainer? -

Most reputable companies require at least 21 days with a trainer for someone with less than 6 months OTR. It's almost always an insurance requirement. However, some smaller decent companies may not have that requirement because they're not running a huge fleet of trucks, i.e. the insurance company assumes a much smaller risk with a company that hires only 2 or 3 students a year, vs. big companies that hire hundreds.
I would recommend going with a trainer, I can almost promise you that you'll be so lost on your first few loads without that extra time spent asking questions from someone who not only knows trucking, but knows how the company wants things done.SideWayz Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the reply's. You have made a good point. I don't think it will be the driving part that gives me trouble but everything else will be new to me such as dealing with receivers and all the paper work that comes with the job. I will keep that in mine when the time comes to pick a company for my first year OTR.

I would recommend being prepared to have some references available to help verify that you have been doing SOMETHING with your life other than being a useless waste of space (drug addict, alcoholic, meth manufacturer, etc.). I'm 30 and the past two years of my employement have been self-employment, and before that I was unemployed for two and a half years while I packed on classes at college (near double full time) while trying to get into the military. As I remember from my conversations with Central Refrig, CRE, Schneider, Gordon/GTI, Gardner, and others be prepared to bring evidence and it should be alright just as long as I haven't been working in the trucking industry and trying to hide it (can't work in the industry if you don't have the license
).
