I have not gotten to the 2290 part of the Schneider application.
The online EIN application fails for me with an error 101 meaning there is some sort of SNAFU happening at the IRS.
Taking the plunge. My journey as an O/O.

Error 101 is not a connectivity or system busy error. It is a data conflict error. I tried to fix it over the phone, and failed. Going to try and sidestep the problem entirely by creating an LLC and getting an EIN for the LLC.dwells40 Thanks this.

Remember, the bank you open an account with is going to require a copy of the SS-4. That goes for anyone you apply for credit with under that LLC.
In addition, banks usually require a copy of the Articles of Organization for the LLC filing as a sole member, and Articles of Incorporation if filing as an S-Corp or traditional corporation. Some banks require a copy of any lease agreement from the LLC to be included even for a sole member LLC. My state doesn't, but it varies from state to state.
You're required to use a "Registered Agent" for the LLC as well. So get ready to jump a few hurdles along the way in this new venture of yours

Farmerbob1, Midwest Trucker and dwells40 Thank this. -
Figured out what happened to cause the confusion.
Crete does handle o/o form 2290's.
They do it with a limited power of attorney that I forgot about since I signed on with them as an o/o 2.5 years ago.
I *DO* have an EIN. I just didn't know it, because Crete acquired it for me.
That explains everything. Crete has sent me a copy of the EIN document from the IRS, so I can move forward with Schneider.
I will still get the LLC because it's a smart thing to do.dwells40 and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
If you are getting that for the sole purpose of “protecting” yourself don’t bother. Should something happen you, your business and whatever company you are leased to will all be sued.dunchues, Old_n_gray and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

And since you are the driver you will be sued personally for whatever an attorney thinks you did. The LLC offers no protection theredunchues, Old_n_gray and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

It’s still a good idea for him to get his LLC setup. My guess is in a couple years he may want to move on again to some thing new and having an aged company that’s been doing business for years will only help.
Jarhed1964, Siinman, dwells40 and 2 others Thank this. -
Wish I could thank this multiple times. @Farmerbob1 hire a lawyer.

If he forms an S Corp he'll have a business that will age. The LLC thing is something a lot of people get hung up on thinking they can't be sued. If he hires a driver in the future then the LLC can protect his personal assets when that driver has an accident. Otherwise it's just a fee you pay for what I think is a false sense of security.Cat sdp and Farmerbob1 Thank this.
