Since you said ...most of the problem was caused by the opti-idle set up ...would it be better ..to just idle continuously...and not use opi-idle at all
Taking the plunge. My journey as an O/O.

Yessir. Now I’m buying new trucks and getting 5 yr 500k warranty but that was only in the last 1.5 yrs. Prior to that I was buying used 1 owners around 250 to 350k miles and buying Cummins 2nd owner Encore XT1 warranty for 2 yrs 200k warranty.
I’ve paid the big bills plenty of times and it’s the inconsistency and big hits that kill you. The managed risk and consistency is what I’m after now.Rideandrepair, JonJon78 and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
I do not think so. The DEF systems apparently have issues with lots of idling or low temperature operation. The way I understand it, the chemical reactions are cleaner and more complete when the one-box unit is running hot.
A constant low load, low RPM idle might even be worse than the opti-idle implementation, but I might be wrong.Rideandrepair and JonJon78 Thank this. -
Manufacturers are engineering their trucks to be optimal for standard Mega operating practices.
Run them 400-500k miles with minimal maintenance then sell them with tons of deferred maintenance to people who are afraid (or unable) to buy new.
I don't even want to think what sort of problems I might have bought if I hadn't bought the same truck I drove for 250k miles.
As it was, I was 300 miles from buying a new 12,000 dollar Detroit one-box DEF system.Rideandrepair and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
I was wondering about that... it’s possible when things get up to temp the truck shuts off vs doing s good regen. I don’t see why an idle truck vs a operating truck would be much difference. I’m not sure though just a thought.Rideandrepair and Farmerbob1 Thank this.
