So I met with a Schneider recruiter yesterday. It was a nice little one on one meeting which I was surprised about and the recruiting manager seemed like a straight shooter or at least better than the few other company's recruiters that I've spoke to. Anyway, I told him I was mostly interested in the tanker division and he replied that tanker drivers are hurting right now and I'd be much better off going dedicated on the Amazon account. He said that it is more consistent and I'd have more home time. He claimed 7 days out, 2 days home (I'd probably want to stay out for 2 weeks anyway) and I'd be kept within a 700 mile radius of the Avenel, NJ terminal.
Now I know that fuel is down and all but would it really be a poor choice to run tanker or are they just trying to fill seats for the upcoming holiday season to pull Amazon's freight. I'm a new driver still in school so I'm not expecting to find my dream job right out of the gate but I did want to get into tankers since there are several decent sized local chemical haulers near me that I will apply to after I do my time. Any insight on this is greatly appreciated. I'm in Northern NJ btw.
Tanker or Dedicated Amazon?

more than likely you spoke to a recruiter on the van division side and that's why he's encouraging you to go on Amazon because he has nothing to do with the tank or side and doesn't want to lose the bonus or so to speak of getting a van driver...
lmcclure1220, Puppage and AM14 Thank this. -

My school is in Linden and all I see is tankers on rt. 1&9. And i live within the required 50 miles to the Keasbey terminal. 49 miles away to be exact. I guess the recruiter was just trying to fill some van slots in his division like drvrtech77 suggested because he really did shoot the bulk division down immediately. Next step is to talk to a recruiter on the tanker side. Schneider already has my app and I have an appointment for the TSA Haz-Mat stuff and TWIC this week so hopefully I'll have it in 5 weeks when I get out of school. I'm still keeping all options open and willing to hear anybody out but my preference is definitely tanker.

Yes, don't even think about pulling a van. Jump on that bulk training and run with it. The options you will have the day your Schneider contract obligations are met will be astronomical. More money and less work in bulk.

Whatever company becomes your choice , limit what you will compromise toward your end goal.
You have plenty of time to research. Theres a few active company tank guys here and at least one former lease operator from the tank side. Also bend the ear of @ethos a former TE on the bulk side now working elsewhere. All are straight shooters.AM14 Thanks this. -
I can tell you bulk freight IS slow right now, so I don't think the recruiter was lying to you. They have bulk drivers right now moving to the van side till next year, so they can keep their miles, then will be moving back to bulk early next year when bulk freight picks back up.
AM14 Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the input everyone. I got a phone call from Green Bay earlier and spoke with someone. Apparently the recruiter had me listed as a team driver so I fixed that and I told them that I do want to run bulk which wasnt a problem. I have my phone interview this week with and I will inquire further about the tanker side when she calls. I have read about bulk slowing down in the winter months but didn't know that some drivers switched to vans for the time being like jakecat22 posted. I'm still a month away from completing my 160 hours but at least I have my foot in the door.
