Tape up exhaust for transporting a vehicle?

I carry 2 of those, 3 back when I did step deck work.

 

I found mine at a place that makes boat covers and awnings etc.

 

In a pinch you can use a cheap shower cap and tape.

 

Regular duct tape will work. Stack cover is preferable, just looks cleaner. Plastic bag then duct tape if you are worried about leaving residue.

 

Or a condom.

Like to see even a magnum stretch over a 6” stack. Lol!

 

I find it kind of funny they want the exhaust pipe covered yet most exhaust pipes on modern equipment have a funnel between the emission module and the actual exhaust stack designed to try and draw air out of the engine compartment. I'd imagine air could still be drawn through.

 

It has also been proven that there is no way to cause turbo damage, no major manufacturer recommends covering the exhaust in transport. It would require air to flow all the way back out the air filter. It's highly unlikely, there would have to be a cylinder in valve overlap and all the stars would have to align. I mean wouldn't that just happen parking your equipment facing the wrong way in Wyoming? lol But if that is what the customer wants than whatever.

 

Valves on the engine don't need to be open for air from the air filter to spin the turbo or air from exhaust stack to spin turbo back thru air filter either. Those blow straight thru. A turbo can be spun independent of the flow thru the engine heads. You can do it with a shop vac.
You can shut an engine down and turbo can still be heard winding down 10-20 seconds after without oil supply from a running engine. You hear it on straight pipes all the time.

 

Usually its a liability thing. If they take the precaution and something explodes later the manufacturer has a much harder time wiggleing out of paying for it. I.E lawyers are the true rulers of the world
