Well this time we were able to push and get home early! We would have been earlier by 3 hours, but I stopped and slept for 2 hours on top of Parley and we had a trailer tire replaced in Fernley... I never realized how a bad tire on the trailer could effect the tractor, but OMG! Neither of us got any good rest! There was so much vibration EVERYTHING in the truck was rattling... Sigh... We made it though :)

So right now we are relaxing on the couch, and went out for my 'birthday' dinner.. It was awesome!

Our truck now has over 500K miles! So warrantee is basically over... We've upped how much we set a side for maintenance, and we have an 'overhead' planned for our next week off... The first week in October. We've already replaced all the drives at the tune of $5K+, but they are the top of the the line Bridgestones with the best rolling resistance... Next on the list are the steers before the snows start. We're also looking into the On Spot for this winter... We will be running 70 and 80 weekly, so yeah they might be costly, but chaining at a flip of a switch!! THAT would be nice!

So things are rolling on... Bye for now...

Nope. Have thought about for years and we almost did a few years ago but I wasn't ready.

And, no I have not run a business myself. First step, of course is the training. Going with Swift for that and at least first year for both of us. Which will put me at 18 months as I will have 6 months by the time she finishes her training drive.

I will be putting away every bit I can till then. Goal puts us at at least 2 years for and 18 for her at which point we are looking at being able to afford our first truck.

What I am curious about is it have been better, hind sight being what it is, to have saved bought a good used instead of having run as L/O.

I want to own one with a, hope this is the right word, drom box behind the sleeper that I can have a motorcycle lift ramp installed in. This is a goal we both want.

Happy birthday. I hope you guys enjoy your time off. I am actually home for the weekend myself and have a chance to tag along with the GF for a weekend seminar at the beautiful Rosario Resort on Orcas Island. Obviously she has to attend class, but I can enjoy the scenery and the program. I guess other occupations do it right. Like always I missed you guys by a day on the way to L.A. and on my way back.:dontknow:

I like the On Spot system. When I worked back in Germany some companies were using those systems as well. I mostly see them on buses here. I hope you can convince the guy at the chain check point that those are the real deal. What does the chain law say about those systems? I can see you still have to carry the chains for the show and tell to keep the narrow minded people appeased. :biggrin_25512:

I think your time schedule is about right. YOu need two years experience before going o/o. You will be WAY ahead if you save your money and buy a truck. Company lease programs are very expensive and you are tied to that company. You can buy a very good used truck for less than 50k and there are outside lease/purchase programs like Lone Mountain that are very affordable and you can take the truck to any company you choose. Like a three or four year old truck for $5k down and $1,300 a month paid off in less than 3 years. As a team, that is easy money. With two years experience, you will find that driving the truck is the easy part, it is the business side that will end most o/o careers. As you get closer to going o/o, there is a lot of help here, just ask.

If we could have purchased instead of leasing... We would have chosen that route. However our credit wasn't there, and we needed the flexibility of being NONcompany driver with Klingon's Mom in poor health. Keep aiming for your dreams... They look like good ones :D

Thank you Vikingswen :D My birthday was the 7th, but since we had to take off that day, we celebrated yesterday...

One of these days we'll stop in the same place long enough to say HEY in person :)

The info that we've seen (on the website selling them :/ ) is that the On Spot system is accepted in all 50 states... BUT they only cover one axle... So if both axles need chains, or any drag chains needed... We will still be getting cold and wet. However, if it gets bad enough to ALMOST need chains, or on highways that don't normally require chains, but because of icy roads we feel more comfortable running with 'something'... These deploy with a flip of an inside switch!

Greetings... have been following for some time but first post here. Belated Happy Birthday !. Would be very interested in hearing what you have to say about "on spot". Have spoke to one other driver who had them on his drives, said no one says a word once they see them working. Stopped on Donner and then told- go on. He was very happy.

We don't have them on yet... Checking to see where they install them near our house... We think (and they are checking) that the Freightliner dealer in French Camp does them... If/When we get them I'll give a review :)

I've been lax on entering our fuel... But from April 2012 - mid-July 2013 is done... Our overall MPG isn't TOO bad. I'm getting inspired to figure out our 'numbers'... More to follow ;)

Finally got ALL our fuel in... This even covers last year when we had the injector problems and wasted a bunch of fuel until everything got fixed. I'm going to try to talk Klingon into getting the 'scan gauge', but he does have one point.. The boost numbers ARE on the QC.. Mmmm, need to find a different angle!
