I can say, I’ve noticed it too. Plenty of parking available. I didn’t think much at first. Weekends, summertime, holidays, Even places in the south, that are usually jammed on the weekend, had spots available. It’s just a sign of less freight. Drivers must be getting some home time. Carriers trying to balance lees work available and Driver retention. I’ve also noticed more backpackers, moving about. I’m surprised, seems job opportunities are everywhere. A sure sign of economic upheaval is Folks traveling to a different area. Be it hitchhikers, or U hauls loaded with belongings. I imaging soon the U hauls will be next. People searching for better opportunities. Already noticed an increase of panhandlers. Guy bummed a light for his cigarette at 3:00 AM, came out of nowhere, We were parked nosed in at a somewhat secluded spot. Almost caused me to have a heart attack. I’ve seen if before. Back in 09, I traveled from Chicago to Detroit. Only saw one Truck going west the whole trip. It was eerie. Normally it’s one long convoy, all night Mon through Friday. I wondered if things were in the toilet for good, never to improve. On the flip side, as things got better, I missed all the open parking, and lack of Trucks on the road. I agree, this is the beginning of a major slowdown. Enjoy the parking while you can. Expect more DOT inspections. Maybe a DOT free for all, trying to thin the herd. I’d swear they did it in 08-09. Myself and a couple friends of mine, got so many tickets, after years of none. All 3 of Us almost lost our Drivers Licenses. State Troopers everywhere were working hard for revenue, as States lost their steady tax bases. Hang on, the rides just beginning.

I don’t fuel at any of the Loves you mentioned, but the few locations I routinely fuel at are the same cluster F@@@. I only buy fuel there because the carriers discount I receive is too hard to pass up. Thinning the herd occasionally is good for those of us who are in this business for the long haul.

That’s the college educated truckers going back to their jobs now that the country is open and they’re out of their contract with the mega’s.

So then why are so many trucking companies still hiring new drivers?

Very likely the 100%+ annual turn over rate the Mega Carriers experience.

They pay by the mile you sit = they don't pay.
