You go Nana. I've been right where you are. When I was in school the guys in my class all laughed at me because I took my camera with me and took pictures of absolutely every part of the pre-trip so I could study it at home. I had no idea what those parts were, and the pictures sure helped. And by the way, the guys weren't laughing when I finished first the class.

My husband came in as I was typing this, and I told him of your experiences and your first day, and he said to tell you that Termite (his nickname from his biker and trucking days) said to tell you to "chill" and to "get out there and just gas on it girl!" That is his wonderful way of sending you a big hug, giving you support, and sucking up for your cookies. Love you my friend. Hang in there!

Nana don't be stressing. I remember way back when I went to driving school ( I think it was all the way in November of 08 lmao). I am the least mechanically inclined man you will ever meet, but I was the only person in our class who nailed all 108 parts of the pretrip perfectly. Now some of the guys who I went to school with still call me and ask for my help with issues since I am the prof.

When you have little mistakes don't let them get you down, just take your time and learn from them, just the other day I had my first incident, and I was shaken up by it bad (my nerves were shot for 2 days). Luckily the other driver was very understanding and helped me by reminding me we learn from our mistakes if we are fortunate, and no driver out there has a perfect record no matter what they may say.

Keep your head up Nana and you will come through all of this with flying colors.

 

Hey Nana,
I start back to school at Clark State tomorrow. I am sure we could compare notes and have a laugh. I had started backing and had to put everything on hold due to a family problem but here I go again. Keep up the great posts and best of luck. I should start a thread so we can compare and laugh our butts off.

I've interviewed a lot of women drivers who started out in their fifties with no experience. They all expressed a lot of the same concerns you have but turned out as excellent professional drivers.

I'm so glad that you have such a warm and supportive group of people to work with. Keep us posted.

 

Thank you all so very much! Your encouragement means so much to me and it empowers me. Now for a very quick update.

I passed the class with a very good average. I'm greatly happy with myself. Today I went to the DMV and..............................*drum roll* I PASSED the written CDL test! Yes, I now have a learner's permit! I'm very excited and rather proud of myself. I'm also proud of my class, they're smart, wonderful people. I couldn't have done this without them, my family and the members of this forum.

Tomorrow we start learning the driving skills and I'm beginning to freak myself out again. However, I AM going to learn this and I will do well at it. If it takes me longer than others........then so be it......but I will NOT quit. I almost quit the first day and now I have passed the class and the state written test. I'll do this part too.

Now the real fun begins Nana, just think when your done, their won't be anything that you can't drive. Just take your time, don't be nervous, we all get that way when we first start out. I know now after driving almost 4yrs, I can drive and back up my truck better than my car...
