What makes you think this was older equipment?

Dave Sweetman in one of his recent articles told about the time he delivered a brand new trailer and it had a hub fire and burnt. But like the OP says, must have been old!

Probably ran a hub dry and it caught the tire on fire. Just my guess.

Everything spontaneously combust’s once it hits 20 years old. It’s a built in time use limit feature to assure the manufacturers to sell new stuff. Starting with the 2016’s they lowered that time limit to 3 years.

It's been over a decade since boydston made that particular trailer.

Not disagreeing with y'all's point that older doesn't necessarily mean spontaneously combust

“ heard an explosion” , was more like he didn’t see , or did see the smoke pouring out of the wheels when a brake can locked up and cooked an axle seal and just kept going. Just like every smashed front bumper was a “ deer”
    Lol....
Well maintained older equipment is just as , if not more reliable than newer equipment. A lot has to do with the ### in the seat.
