I snapped these pics right after getting off the ferry at Mackinac Island in Michigan. For those not familiar, it's an island in Lake Huron between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace in the upper peninsula. It's a pretty interesting historical site / tourist trap that I had to take the wife and mother in law to before my boys and I could spend the rest of the week fishing in the UP. Anyway, to preserve the historical atmosphere there are no automobiles allowed on the island except for a handful of emergency vehicles.

To service all the restaurants lightening the wallets of hungry tourists, the food trucks take a ferry to the island where they are unloaded on the dock into horse drawn wagons which then make the final distributions. They then take the ferry back to the mainland to do who knows what. Given the amount of food the place must go through, I'd guess they drop the empty and take another pup across. Either way, I thought it was pretty interesting to see and I thought @Mike2633 might like to see what fun his buddies get to have.

I wonder if the drivers like doing this stop or hate it.

Probably ought to clarify, the horse and wagons come down from the hotels and restaurants to pick up their products. But if I had seen a wagon with a giant GFS decal on the side, I'd have chased it all over the island just to get a picture.

So the driver just run it down the ramp and put it on a wagon? Sounds like a good deal.

Wow what a pain that must be lol... Pretty interesting though, it's good to know someone out there is more old fashioned than me. I wonder if the tourists have half a clue how all that food gets to their tables.

We get all kinds. It's probably not a bad stop just unload out of the back of the trailer, although the separation might be a pain. Actually that's probably several stops. We do places like the airport where we have 3 stops come off the truck at the same loading dock.
I've done a US Coast Guard ship. I just ran the food down the ramp and the crew actually took it all away and boarded it on the ship. Actually everyone who was the crew of the Coast Guard ship was really nice and it was a pretty good deal.

I'm always interested in seeing what fun the other GFS drivers get to have. Good to know there spreading the fun around lol.

100 years ago Issac Van-Westenberg the founder of GFS delivered cheese and butter to local merchants in Grand Rapids, Michigan and they used exactly that a horse and buggy the buggy used to say Van-Gordon Cheese and Egg so that's not to far off. GFS has a lot of cool old time pictures from back in the day there might be one of those GFS wagons around somewhere.

We have Tangier Island, out in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay.

I recall one shipment going there I took to our interline partner down that way. This must be how that got delivered, because I've been on that island before. The streets are barely suitable for golf carts.
