We can run more weight per axle here than it seems American trucks are allowed.
But we also tend to just keep adding more axles, much more than you do south of the 49.
Super B trucks are a regular sight on our hwys, as are tri drive trucks. Most everyone here runs a minimum of 6 axles, 5 is rare. But 7 and 8 axle make up a good percentage of what you see on the road here. Less trucks seem to drive coast to coast up here, than there. Things arriving by ship seem to often come into both sides of the country, and if it has to go all the way across, there is a decent chance it will go by train most of the way, and trucked the last bit. About 5 years ago I spent 3 days a week, for 4 months, hauling logs that came by train, to a railway siding, where a button top would transfer them to my truck, and many others, we then hauled those logs a measly 9 kms to the mill, and just went back and forth. It was hell, I was so bored. Thankfully the other 3 days a week I hauled fuel in a Super B to a mine, which was in the middle of nowhere.

But that's not the definition of a "divisible load". If the freight can be made legal width ,within reason, it cannot be permitted for oversize. You can have 100 pieces on your trailer, ranging in width from 2" to 200", and it not be divisible. But if two 52" pieces are loaded side by side and permitted the load, that permit would be void upon inspection as a divisible load.

They took 1 row off and centered up other two, 96 crates instead of 144 delivering in Ohio as I type this. Sent broker, TQL, same photo I posted here and they said no problem. Made shipper make load legal and I put it in the wind. Like I said though, I watched two of their trucks pull out and motor up the road loaded like the photo, top was snugged up and strapped of course, one supposedly going intrastate in TX and other to OK. I spoke with drivers personally and said they haul that way all the time and didn’t understand why I raised a fuss.

Shipper..."The guy that used to haul for us did it like that. "

Me..."Maybe you better call him for this one too. I can't haul those like that".

Shipper..."I can't call him. He got a bunch of fines and stuff and went out of business".

Correct, it has to be a single piece. For example, if you had 4, 10ft plastic tanks. You load them down the center for a 10ft wide load at 40ft long. It doesn't weigh enough to be divisible and the single pieces are wide. I've never seen or heard of anybody stupid enough to load things side by side to make their load wider. Thought it went without saying......guess not. Obviously ag gets a pass on......well.....everything.

Always get a bit concerned when you here that phrase.
“We do it like this all the time” or any variations.

A year and a half later, I'd like to offer up a fresh F U to Sterling Heights, OH, and to the broker that promised a TONU if it wasn't able to be made legal, and then refused to pay. I really considered killing his dog.
