I always thought it was a perk to have a sign on bonus a few years ago, but I guess with some of the horrible companies out there this is the only way they can get people hired.

It's too bad companies are so bad really.

Churning drivers pays the companies tax credits for new hires. It's guaranteed money from the government. What could be any easier for them? They can chitcan a driver whenever they want for any or no reason. Bonus money bypasses the FICA withholding that the employer must match when paying wages so it's cheaper for them to offer bonus money. The driver wages are low to keep their churning gig going and lessen the match they pay in FICA withholding. Then when you retire you get to live on $500 a month after busting your hump all your life. The school reimbursement is even tax deductible to the company. They're set up to make out on tax credits and deductions before they ever have you roll a mile.

The bonus is actually wages disguised as a bonus to defer FICA withholding. The dollars saved in doing it this way is huge for a large company.

My brother in law quit them a year and a half ago after 5 solid years with them. One would think a long term employee would be worth bending over backwards to keep on, but they let him get away to another carrier.

Long term employees have vacation weeks accumulated and other benefits as well. Companies don't much like handing out that free money, so they roll the dice and gamble on the seasoned guy staying or leaving. It's a win either way for them. If a vet leaves they are relieved of continuing to pay vacations etc and they can replace that vet with two greenhorns for the same money plus they'll have tax credits coming in on them.
