Have a chance to buy this for 16,000.
I am thinking of throwing a newer reefer on it.
For 13-16,000 I can get a reefer less than 10 years old and under 10,000 hours. This however would bring the price to 32,000. For 32,000 it seems I can get a newer trailer with low hours. What am I missing? The 40,000 hour reefer has been well maintained. Should I just rock with it, and fix as needed?
Thinking about buying a 2009 TK. 40,000 hours

How many newer trailers are available right now? How much could severe down time cost you in this trucking economy? Are brand new reefer available?

Great Dane, sorry, also it's a carrier 2100

Da#nit! Wasn't just a couple years ago new were around 60k. Are any new available?
I'd weigh out the cost of a used one, then try to factor in losses that a "well used" may cost. Tough market on everything right now.Jarhed1964 and slow.rider Thank this. -

I got my 2016 with 7800 hours on a Carrier x4 7500 for $37k three months ago, but I think they're sold out now. Reefer insulation degrades over time; ten year old reefers could have lost over 25% of their thermal efficiency. Still serviceable for most applications but higher cost per use. Many "0 and below" shippers demand 10 years old or newer.
But with rates as high as they are, a cheap trailer might pay for itself in just a few months if it doesn't have any major problems. If it lasts longer than that, it's pure gravy. If I got it, I would hope it pays for itself and gets me thru until newer trailers come down into the stratosphere.
I guess viability would depend a lot on how easy it is for you to find repair shops in your running area. But many repair shops are swamped these days too. With nobody able to get new equipment, they all have to repair what they've got instead.Last edited: Jun 28, 2021
