Hey y’all,
Newer to the long haul life, been out here about 6 months and finally settling into my own rhythm. Got a quick question (and I know some folks get all uppity about this stuff so relax)—but I’ve been thinking about bringing my AR-15 with me in the truck. Not just for show, I mean actually having it in the sleeper, maybe mounted behind the seat or tucked in the side box.
Before anyone jumps down my throat—I do have a CCW from my home state (Idaho), but I ain’t gonna pretend like I fully understand all the ins and outs of carry laws across 48 states. Frankly, I don’t got time to check every state law every time I cross a border. I just figure if I keep it outta sight, what’s the harm?
I know some of y’all are carrying pistols, and I hear mixed things—some say DOT don’t care, others say it’s a felony if you cross into the wrong place. But I’m thinkin’ if things go south out here—especially at these rest stops where the sketch gets real after dark—I’d rather have my AR than just a 9mm.
So what’s the real deal here? Anybody else carry long guns in the cab? Y’all think it’s worth worrying about the legal stuff or just keep it quiet and do what you gotta do?
(Also side note: I might have mentioned to a weigh station guy I had “protection” in the cab—he didn’t say nothin’, just gave me a look and waved me through. So I’m thinking it ain’t that big of a deal.)
Looking forward to hearing what the seasoned folks think—unless you’re just gonna tell me to knit a blanket and call 911 when I get scared.
Stay safe, or stay armed. Or both.
Thinking of Carrying My AR in the Sleeper—Legal or Nah?

I can't understand any situation outside of having no other option but to use it where you world ever talk to someone about it.
You cant be bothered to spend 3 seconds on a Google search of reciprocity maps but are dropping hints to random DOT officers at weigh stations?

Only thing I’m going to offer is an AR is the wrong choice for personal protection. If the perp is far away enough for an AR, you’re going to have some serious explaining to do. A sidearm is the way. If the perp makes it inside your occupied truck, the mere site of a sidearm will probably be enough to send them the other direction.

In the bunk, reachable and obscured. Is short answer. Corect answer is No, get a pistol because mechanic might come across it while fixing something. You will want to take it out when someone is in the truck for whatever purpose.
