I'm currently 7 years away from retiring at 54 doing a job i don't like very much anymore. it's easy work with good pay...i just want something new.
i have a clean record and spotless work history going back to the '80s.
if this current position ended tomorrow, i would go take my written CDL test and try and find a bus driving tour company or OTR truck co to take my CDL road test. Hopefully this would get me driving within 4-6 weeks. i'd prefer a coach touring job over the OTR job. i'd keep this job for a year and then re-evaluate.
i'm guessing i could earn 30k after taxes, thats net $2500 a month as a new driver.
am i outta line with this plan or is it possible? feel free to shoot holes in it as you see them.
thanks,
rs
This is my plan

I've never driven a bus... Nor have I looked into that avenue. But personally I believe that in able to drive a bus you will need some OTR experience. So you may have to haul groceries for a year before you think about hauling people!
-
If it were me,...I would try to stick it out as long as I could making good money at a easy job and try to avoid the trucking industry like it was the plague,...........
But that is just my opinion,................ -
Better you than me! I don't want to haul nothin' that's breathin'! Cows, People,Lab rats or whatever.
I like my freight inanimate! -

I know,.....But like I said,....If it were me I would stick with what I had until they made me retire,........
Just about everything in this industry sucks,...And it will get much worse in the coming years,......Why would anybody want to do this???? -
When those little kids are running around at a young age saying they are going to be a police officer, fireman, astronaut... I always said that I was going to be a truck driver. -
Plan "A" is to retire in 7 years, but if events occur like...
early out/buy out
fired
offered rediculus transfer to san juan etc
then plan "B" will be to join the truckers ASAP.
What's wrong with haulin groceries? sounds ok to me. -
I would never do something this demanding if it wasn't something that I love doing!
The ones that get me are the ones that are always whining about how bad it is but never even try to do whatever it is that they would like to do.
In all of the years that I've been out here I've worked hard but have enjoyed myself pretty much every day...Some days I enjoy more than others but I enjoy them all.dec224 Thanks this. -
