I am going to take the plunge and buy a used Melton truck. 2016 Kenworth T680. 394k miles, Cummins ISX, 10 sp manual, Termal King APU with 2,500 hours, loaded for flatbed with custom headache rack, chain racks, and a big toolbox 48"x24".
Cost is $66,500 for truck and $8,000 for extended Warranty. Still have a few manufacturers warranty on some components.I will buy the warranty since it will be finance with truck.
Truck is being Dyno by Cummins and if results comes out good, I will take the deal. 15% down($11,175) down. Monthly payments are aprox $1600/m for 48 months. Financing was approved by PACAAR Financial at 10.5% interest on loan.

Based on my research, I personally would only go with an original mfg.
Looking forward to updates as I'm looking for an open-deck ready truck with apu. -
Midwest Trucker and 9417 Thank this.

My first truck was an old Melton T660 purchased directly from them. It treated me very well and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I were doing it over and decided to go that direction again.
9417 Thanks this. -
Honestly I think that's a lot of money for Warranty. Is this a third party or manufacturer. I have a 2015 680 and it's doing good with 625k on it. Fuel mileage is good to but I have quit a bit done to mine. One good thing about the Cummins is you can Tune that motor up to run super sweet. One suggestion I have is to get one of these done. Diesel Force Comprehensive Maintenance System . It cleans the entire motor, I have been almost trouble free for the last 180k since I had mine done. Also look into this and that EGR system will stay trouble free for a long time. Diesel Force Comprehensive Maintenance System

After seeing a video on a Landstar O/O experience with his extended warranty and a LoanMountain truck, I think I will invest in this extended warranty.
My last truck had very similar problems as his. Maintenance records was solid, truck seems to run good, but right after I took it off the lot, i had emission system nightmare. Then headgasket went out and #3 cylinder dropped. Most of this would of been covered with the extended warranty. I did not buy the warranty so it cost me over $30k in these repairs.
The $8k warranty got me lowered interest on loan, tax deductable expense and it will most likely be used, I am betting that i will need it soon since my new used truck was sitting for many many months before i bought it. These newer emission trucks do not sit well. Also, many turbo go out at around 400k to 500k so that might be needed too.
According to my sales rep who shown me his monthly emails on pay out to extended warranty repairs by Premium 2000, most of these were on emission related problems. The aggregate repairs for all emission related issues is only $7k and I know I will use this up real soon. -
I used to drive 4 them. I think the t660s were selling for $48k at over 450k on them. Seems high to me. Are you going to Melton or someone else to buy?
If not, go to Melton, prob alot cheaper. -
Now, if in 2 years, 250k miles i ended up not using the extended warranty because my truck did not broke down, then I would truely be bless and would not mind dumping $8k because I would of paid off the truck. Downtime cost much more than repair bills. Adding downtime and a repair bills together will set me back years.
This will be my truck #9 and in all of these purchases, i have had to spend at least $4k in repairs within first 3 months. So this is a sure bet. -
I am buying my truck from Kenworth Dealer who had inspected these trucks as best they can. I called Melton directly and they wanted more for thier used trucks with same mileage and year. Note that Mellton will not let you test drive off their lot due to so call insurance reasons and will not allow you to take truck to dyno.
