Don’t cut straps if that would endanger your health or employment - I trust you have that sense.
Can’t explain why the ergo bar helps, but I wouldn’t use any other. I’m not a physics buff - perhaps someone else could explain.
Tips for loosening extremely tight straps on a winch?

Leverage is your friend. Learning to use your body weight to your advantage, Even at 120 lbs.
The key is finding the right bar for you. You can get bars in several lengths, or modify one to meet your needs.
On the Ergo bars. They do work and some people swear by them.crackerjack123 and Highway Sailor Thank this. -

OP,
Where do you put your extra section of the strap?
One method is fold up your loose end like. This /\/\/\/\/\/\/
Leave a loop in middle hanging out so you can grab it with kigpin puller.
Once you tighten the winch take the loose end and place it under the strap section being tightened.
So putting your excess strap under your main load section of strap. This is where you put the loop. Now tighten winch. You should be able to pull the excess strap free from under the tightened strap. Using the fithwheel kingpin puller.
Practice it a few times. I'm not next to my flat bed to take pics.JonJon78 and crackerjack123 Thank this. -
This is beside the point, but straps shouldn't be that tight. Tell the jokers strapping your trailers to knock it off. You said it yourself, whenever you tighten them the load gets there in one piece, so remind them of that.
However you get them loose, stay out of the dreaded Arc of the Winch Bar. Don't be frustrated into coming out from beside the bar into a dangerous spot. Can I get a hell yeah from my toothless homies??beastr123 and crackerjack123 Thank this. -

I'm over 240 so I don't have the weight to leverage problem lol, but I notice some of my "lightweight" fellow drivers having the problem you have and give them a hand when I can, but I also help guys fold their tarps unlike many.
I will look at my winches later on today when I get to the shop, I might have a little idea that can "safely" assist you.
It sounds like your problem stems from the yard guys lack of knowledge!beastr123, TripleSix and crackerjack123 Thank this. -
Thank you OLDSKOOLERnWV. ANY ideas you have I'm open to exploring. Yeah, sometimes the yard guys/local drivers think it's funny and I'm not laughing.
