^^ I think you got it. Drug test required at hire.

Physical the option of the company. Medical card is acceptable proof.

Most companies, not all, skip over the cost of the physical. The big exception is the Mega; I think they all do the physical to cull the heard.

No O/O or small company is going to get the bulk rate for the physical that the Megas get in recruiting 10-20 drivers at a time. So in general that does not happen with a few exceptions.

When a boy is born he has nothing. Then he learns to some basics actions that start the physical learning process of being a boy then a man that will stay with him for life. He also learns to speak. Which in turn turns into his word as a man. With his word he learns from his elders respect..

    Moral of the story?

A man has only 3 things in life that dictates the type of man he is.

    1) his word ( say what you mean and mean what you say)
    2) his work ( take pride in what you do regardless of what it is and do it to the best of your ability)
    3) his respect (family, friends, work)

If he has signed an agreement with the company accepting an offer then he is obligated to take the job under his word as a man.

If he has gone to the medical/drug screen on the basis of employment but it hasn't been accepted yet, he should do the right thing contact the employer and state what he has been offered. Give them the opportunity to match it. If they say no offer to cover the cost of the medical and part on good terms. Because you never know what the future may hold...

A man who's word is meaningless goes thru life with no respect. With no respect a man is worthless..................

2 years ago, after working for a company for just over a year, my old employer called me out of the blue and offered me a position that paid better. Now I'm not normally the kind of guy that jumps at a few dollars over job satisfaction but I was going through a divorce, shared child custody etc so I needed the extra income.

So being the honorable guy that I am, I called my manager and explained the situation and told him I wanted to do the right thing, give them the chance to match the offer. They had been good to me. Within 2 days I heard from my managers manager, the head honcho for the account I worked, that they would most definitely match the new offer and they were very pleased that I gave them the opportunity. Needless to say I turned down the other offer, with thanks for the consideration.

3 weeks go by and I see nothing on the pay checks. Talk to manager, he'll look into it. Month goes by nothing. Call manager again and he says yeah...about that....tuns out you won't be getting that raise after all. No hard feelings though right? Of course by this time the other position is filled.

The moral of the story is this. Today is not 20 years ago. Back then you gave your word and you could trust your employer to keep theirs. These days every company will sell your ### down the river in a heart beat to save a nickel.

You're right and that's what some of us have been trying to tell the OP in a way. Personally, I wouldn't even offer to pay for the physical unless they asked for it.

What is this "word" and "commitment" talk? Is there a contract? What is this, feudal Japan? Good god...

Id pay for the physical if I signed paperwork saying I would cover it if I declined employment. Otherwise, good luck. Miss out on a year of higher pay because some (probably a mega) company spent $60 on you? Wow

Wow... some of you guys suck... contract or not, if someone hires you on and pays for your crap and only asks for a six month commitment in return, you should finish the commitment. Worse comes to worse reimburse their investment in you after giving them plenty of heads up. Seriously, cowboy up, whatever happened to people giving each other their word?

Employment is "at will" in the USA. This company would fire your grandson in 20 seconds if they knew it would save them 0.1% on their bottom-line profits. Loyalty is a guilt trip they use to keep you around until they want to terminate you.

Id say yes, that employer is going to spend a couple bills in workers comp, insurance, and time for you to quit after 6 months or a year. If all they paid was a physical and drug test, they will make out better than if you quit later.

Ive never had the mentality that i am obligated to keep my word when i can be dropped from the ship for anything. I will do my best to be an excellent employee, but i will not treat you like family when you involve money on a regular basis.

I just cant believe people will throw away time, wether 6 months or a 1 year. Just to show you have pride? If your not going to be happy, pride needs to take a backseat for a minute.

    Not pride. Integrity.
    Contract. Commitment.
Breach of contract, by either party, is what it is.
    Happy?
    Hope you've found it.
