Top cover or the shift tower on top of the cover? Shift tower would be relatively easy. 4 bolts and its out (just don't drop the springs!). Top cover is quite a bit more involved though. Could be quite the PITA to do with the transmission in the truck. Cover needs to be lifted probably a good 8" for the shift forks to clear the housing. Probably would need to drop the driveshaft out so you can crawl up and reach all the bolts (unless you can pull the shift tower and reach them through the hole in the floor).
I'm guessing with a quote of $1000 they plan on dropping the transmission to do it. If that's the case I would seriously consider a clutch job, flywheel resurface and rear main seal if they've been in service for a long time.

Many just don't want to get dirty- I Learned on my own to repair my trucks over the years- And its NOT hard if you have half a brain.
Sure,Parts can get heavy- And you'll get dirty- But its not hard to fix these things- a touch of common sense and practicality will get things fixed. -
I was planning on cleaning up area so that I can see where its actually leaking from then possibly RTV/silicone it.

Here's a thought though. Its kind of a half-assed way of doing things but if you can't get the cover out with the transmission in place you could always lift it as high as it can go and suspend it some how. Clean off the old gasket and the mating surfaces really well and just use a small bead of sealant instead of the gasket. Drop the cover back on and bolt it back together. Like I said its not the correct way.
What are everyone else's thoughts on this?mitmaks Thanks this. -
Not the way I would do it but........Hi temp RTV might work

One really LAZY way to check is via the shifter boot cover. U will need to be inside the truck (not under...if your gut wont let you slim-up magically...LOL)
Remove the boot, grab a flash light, take a peek. Might need a sight mirror. -
No offense to anyone, but a lot of drivers/owners really panic and over react with the severity of oil leaks. I can't tell from your first post in the picture how bad it is, but most leaks are very minor, only cosmetic and only collect dust and look worse than they really are. Are you really sure it needs to be fixed? Did you ever check the level? I said before, it could be simply over full and coming out the breather or overwhelming the tower.

Reviving this old thread, I have a 2014 with a 13 spd. I’m having a similar issue with the oil leak on top of the transmission(gear oil), seems it coming from the breather. When I was wiping the excess gear oil to find where it is leaking, I noticed an o-ring came out as I remove the shop towels. The o-ring was brittle. The breather looks like a “top hat”, would the o-ring came from the breather ? The shift tower is bolts are tight. And if it was the gasket from the shift tower, the leak wouldn’t be so excess. I cleaned it once and when I checked it again after about 100 mile, it was all over the top again. Can it be the breather missing the o-ring ?
