Trailer lost Tandems

    I was in OUR terminal in Riverside, Ca. and had some dummy pull my 5th wheel and tandems. the next day they switched hoses. I caught them that time! hmm I dont know why he had a flat steer that night. Karma its a B****H !

    I've included some pics of the trailer I'm under right now. It appears the top slide rail is welded at each cross member from the front of the slide to the back. The bottom slide rail is nested in the top slide rail with these P plates keeping them aligned and on track much like a train on railroad tracks. But OMG is that really all there is holding the two rails together is those 4 P plates, gravity, some robot welds and 4 pins???

    The pins also help but unless the tandems are welded to the rail and thats really all that holds the thing together! 4 pins and 4 clamps! The only thing that keeps the trailer from sliding off the tandems is the stop bar and the Bumper!
    The "dog tracking" isn't caused by those clamps. It's the alignment of the axles usually caused from, yes, curbing, slamming the tandems into a curb, big piece of 4x4 or R/R tie attempting to get them to slide or deep pot holes or other large things someone attempted to drive over being stupid.

    But look at those clamps. See how they actually look like a "P"? If you look at one and the clamp is bending upwards it's time for a new one. It's not on any PTI but when you start to learn the parts of your equipment and what they do and how they should work or their positioning then you'll learn what to write up or bring to the shop or mechanics attention.


    I'll ask a question:
    How do you tell when a shock absorber needs to be replaced by looking at it but not removing it? You older hands let the younger drivers try this!

    Would one clue be excessive oil leakage from the shock?

    I once watched a swift driver back his tandems off the front side of the trailer rails.
    We were both picking up ata drop/hook shipper that required tandems to be slid all the way back..i hooked up and slid mine to a legal length and was doing my paperwork and then heard him start cussing on the cb radio and sure enough..he just backedup and backedup until his tandems were offf the trailer rails on sideways under his trailer.
