TAMPA (FOX 13) - A tractor-trailer veered off an Interstate 75 overpass this morning and wound up crashing onto a road below, injuring the driver and leaving a large mess across Fowler Avenue.

The truck driver told troopers that he was headed northbound on I-75 around 6:45 a.m. when another vehicle cut him off. He swerved to avoid a collision and slammed into -- then over -- the barrier wall along the side of the highway.

The truck slammed onto Fowler Avenue below, spilling its load of recycled debris across several lanes. Two vehicles driving along Fowler were damaged by the debris before troopers could close the road.

The 49-year-old driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers are asking anyone with information about the "initiating vehicle" to call them, though they have no description to provide.

Failure to control vehicle. It doesn't matter if he was "cut-off" or not, I highly doubt he was. He's lucky he's alive and that no one else was injured or killed. No place in the industry for this nonsense.

That would be naples / fort Myers area my hometown .

Dump trucks are duct taped POS driven by people that can not read English and were tomatoes farmers in a field with a mule the week before.

How they all get CDLs is beyond me.

Any given day down that 30 mile stretch of 75 there is a 4 car pile up with a dump truck upside down and 2 others cars on fire with bodies in the trees.

    It's Insanity there.

If you've ever had the dubious honor of driving in South Florida you would not doubt this. 4 wheelers here like to cut off, crowd, box in, tailgate and, sometimes, even race trucks, and it happens EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Cars going into "Gladiator Mode" (tm) against trucks is a very common occurence here.

And, if it's not some douchenozzle behind the wheel with an overinflated opinion of his driving skill, then it's a 90-year old senior citizen who should've given up his/her license about 20 years earlier. Pulling right out into the path of a 70 mph semi and doing 30, riding in a blind spot for 10 miles, and cruising at 20 mph below the speed limit in the center and left lanes have replaced shuffleboard, needlepoint and Bridge as senior hobbies in the Sunshine State. Here, it's not a matter of IF you run into (over?) these people but WHEN. I've personally seen stuff go down here that you don't even see in Los Angeles.

I75 and Fowler is a bad area during rush hour traffic. Thing is he was north bound which puts him north of I4 and MLK exits which is where most of the congestion would have been. He should have had clear traffic after I4. Evening rush hour,.. everything from I4 up to 56 is a disaster waiting to happen. I dont miss that commute at all.

How ever,.. this time of year,.. snow birds are a menace and generally double and triple existing populations in certain areas. And yes,. they like to get up early to go get breakfast with their senior discounts and screw up an already problematic traffic area. So it is possible an oblivious silver haired snowbird merged into 70 mph traffic doing 40 mph and forgot what the right foot is for. Happens everywhere in Fla this time of year.
