When I first started trucking I dreaded the truck stop shower. Fear of athletes foot, leprosy or whatever else I might catch. Plus the lack of ventilation and crummy shower heads also assured an unpleasant experience. But being out for weeks at a time required using them. For a decade a ran local and only used my own glorious shower. Now I'm on a gig where I'm usually home every other day. Don't mind waiting to get home for a shower.
BUT every so often I get stuck out for the week and I have found a new appreciation for those nasty showers!

In the old days,it was rare to find a private shower,or even a clean one. Most truckstop showers were community showers, like in the service. When it was busy, you'd be taking a shower with 10 other guys, keeping your wallet in your mouth in some locations,so your pants pockets didn't get picked.Always carried a pair of flip flops for the dirty shower floors.

The showers at Zimmers truckstop in Los Angeles were so bad even the Mexicans wouldn't use them.We were laid over there one weekend, and we found a poor old malnourished dog wandering around the parking lot.Fed him,but his coat and skin was awful, needed a bath. The showers there were upstairs from the fuel desk.We had someone distract the fuel girl clerk, and we carried this big dog upstairs, and put him in the shower, soaped him up real good with warm water. He loved it,and started howling to beat the band he was feeling so good, the whole truckstop could hear him!

The big chief truck stop in Joplin back in the day you hs
ad to share your shower with coach roaches as big as a mouse , I hated showering there -
I think it was a regional thing. My dad hauled produce from California to the east, and I went with him in the '70s. At the truckstops through Amarillo, they had individual showers. When you got back east it was group showers and they smelled like sulfur!
