Here is a scary summary I found...
"According to a 2008 RAND Corporation study evaluating the New York Police Department’s firearm training, between 1998 and 2006, the average hit rate during gunfights was just 18 percent. When suspects did not return fire, police officers hit their targets 30 percent of the time."
It's from http://nation.time.com/2013/09/16/ready-fire-aim-the-science-behind-police-shooting-bystanders/
1 in 5 hit, at best 1 in 3 hit the target aimed for. So shooting twice, on average, means the cop will get nowhere near the target.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
I'm in the camp that thinks that driver is a moron.
I'd have silently watched them unload the stuff while I called the cops. If they got away before the cops got there... well that's what cargo insurance is for.
Now the minute they tried to get in the cab? Well then it's on like Donkey Kong.SESteve83, Hammer166, NavigatorWife and 7 others Thank this. -
To be fair, I wouldn't have thought that area was too dangerous to park overnight. It's not like it's Lamar Ave. or anything.G13Tomcat Thanks this.

Thinking about this. And despite what I have already posted about it.
Why didn't he back up to a dock?
Or get close to the building to prevent the doors from being opened?
I've never delivered to a Home Depot before. I don't know what their security is like. -

Trucker Chases Off Cargo Thieves, Charged For Firing Warning Shots
NEWS

A trucker was awoken early in the morning by three men breaking into his trailer. He scared them off by firing multiple warning shots, but when they returned they opened fire at him. The driver was injured, but not seriously. Now however, he is being charged with a crime.
The unnamed trucker was parked in the parking lot of the Home Depot at 4950 Stage Road in Memphis early on Friday. He awoke just before 6 a.m. Friday morning when he felt the trailer rocking. According to the police report, he “got up and looked in his rear viewing mirror and observed his trailer was surrounded by three vehicles.”
Three men were loading items out of his trailer and into a black Chevy SUV, a silver Mazda 6, and a light-colored two-door car.
Grabbing his gun from the cab, the driver screamed at the men before firing multiple warning shots into the air.
His assailants scattered and fled the scene, leaving the Mazda behind.
As the trucker was on the phone with police reporting the robbery, the men returned, yelling at him to return the keys to their Mazda which they had apparently lost in their flight.
When the trucker replied that he didn’t have the keys, one man opened fire. The trucker wasn’t hit by any of the shots, but he was cut by the shattered glass as it fell.
The driver was taken to a local hospital to have his wounds treated, and later was issued a citation for firing a gun within city limits.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-2774.
Overdrive Online has just finished publishing a three-part series on truckers carrying firearms, which you can check out here. They note that while federal law does not prohibit truckers from carrying a firearm in their vehicle, since laws vary state-to-state, rules governing firearms can become incredible complicated for truckers.

The parking lot may have been the only place that the truck driver was able to find to park for the night.
God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
There's always parking at West Memphis, I been staying at the Dog Track when I'm there and there's lots of parking and it's safe.
Just look down at the people driving cars in the Memphis area, I wouldn't want to be alone at night with them.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
My friends are cops and was told to just plain run. A cop shooting at you will maybe hit you 2 out of 10 times and none will be fatal. A regular person it might be 1 in 20 and won't be fatal. In the heat of the battle it's pretty much spray and pray.
Anyone watch Breaking Bad? Remember the scene where Hank is under fire from someone with an automatic rifle. Nobody is hitting anyone. Finally he remembers his training. He takes a deep breath. Stands right up. Takes his time and shoots once and kills the guy. -
Warning shots. They are fine on TV and in the movies, but anyone who fires warning shots is a moron. First off, as has been pointed you, you don't know where those rounds will end up. Wouldn't it be just great, if your "warning shot" killed a baby sleeping in his crib in a nearby house? Never put yourself in that position.
How many warning shots fired? That much less ammo you have if you really need it.
Either that, or as I alluded to above, ran out of ammo.
I couldn't agree more. But even then, don't be surprised if you get busted in some jurisdictions. Even if they are armed and shooting at you. Never, ever, underestimate the stupidity of the law. And lawyers. And, as much as I hate to say it, cops.
They would rather see you get killed than to admit to a legitimate shooting by a civilian.
Yep.
Probably true. When you spend your range time punching paper, (and unfortunately that is all that a lot of agencies have for "training" as far as shooting goes,) it is a whole new equation when you are being shot at.
Anyone who has ever been in a firefight, whether military, law enforcement or civilian can understand it. Very few people are immune to the adrenaline rush from the combination of fear, and anger.TripleSix, Hammer166, NavigatorWife and 3 others Thank this.
