go to a truck stop or find a truck pratice P/T till you dream about it, know the pump down by heart,,, remember when on the road testing if you stop on a slight down grade do not try to shift 1-2-3 ect you will pick up to much speed , need to skip or start in 2end. review the littlest detail.if you start of talking about your P/t and sound like u know it u will be directed to move ahead with the tst... thats how it went for me

I have used a practice test site called christ CDL its free there questions are mostly correct, and you will pass your test using it. Just practice till you get a hundred % every time then your ready. There are other online practice sites that charge for access, one is CDLQuiz its $30 for 12 months access but it claims a guarantee that you will pass. Just Google CDL practice test.

You didn't specify. Are you going after your CDL Permit or CDL License? If it's your permit test it's General Knowledge, Combination and Air Brake testing. Usually set up as three seperate tests. You have to pass each one individually. If you fail one you can take it again after 24 hours, then take the next one. That was how it was done in Indiana. Maybe PA is different, but it will surely cover the same material. Egears is also a pretty good site, but they may want you to pay a small fee. I would just get the study books from your testing office. They should be available free of charge?

As for getting your license you will need to pass your Pretrip, Four Point Brake, Tug Test, Range then Road. If you have had good schooling it will be a cinch. If not, forget about it, No one passes a CDL Licesne test with out good training, or at least basic experience. Good luck!

sorry its for the cdl road test my uncle has been training me so i feel confident but i keep seeing different things when it comes to the actual pre-trip in the manual for PA it say that i don't have to check under hood or get under vehicle so i'm lost as to if this is the truth or not???? thanks for replying.

No prob. You might get some of your questions resolved by making a phone call to the testing site and see what they expect of you. Pretrip is pretty tough if you don't know the parts of the truck, and what kind of defects to look for. I'm betting your uncle did give you a run down of what to look for, and while that should be plenty, sometimes a test site is looking for very specific items and knowledge. Also the brake test is extremely important. You DO have to be specific, and use the correct wording. Being vague will fail you, and if you fail the brake test, you fail the entire thing. At least that's the way Indy worked.
Seriously though, call the test site and ask what they need from you to pass, and I promise you will pass with ease, and you won't be nervous. Nerves can wreck a test really quick.

I just did my road test a month ago. We had a rep from Olympia(im in WA) come down to do ours since our local lady was busy.....

First thing, sleep, get a good nights rest, get up extra early so you are sure to be wide awake when it comes time for your test.

Second thing, Pretrip...pretrip..and most importantly your Air Supply Tests(air leak test, low air warning, trailer protection valve and air governor.) Here in washington if we say even the wrong thing we fail this and are out 100.00.

As for the basic parts of the truck, I just memorized "cracked, frayed, worn, leaking, rubbing, dented, missing, and securely mounted." There are other words the tester will want to hear, and your states Commercial Driving guide avail at your DMV or on their website will have the info required by your state.

For the driving test, I just asked the person giving the test some things. Such as what gear would they like me to start in. We were able to start off in 3rd on a standard 10sp with an empty trailer. What gear do you want me to be in when coming to a stop? Luckily she was laid back and didnt really care as long as we didnt jerk her around too much while driving.

Keep your head moving, checking your mirrors(make sure you are moving your head enough that they can tell your looking). We also get asked "What did that sign say?" at random and we were only allowed to miss up to 3 or 5 points on these, but we only had to get the first right and they passed us on that category.

Other than that just take your time, enjoy it and dont worry about it. It seemed most of the students in my class who had issues were thinking about it far too much while they were trying to do the drive.

Backing, we are required a straight back and a 45* back and must complete 75% of the motion in order to pass backing. Take these SLOW, no gas just use the rpms of the engine and feather the clutch. Oh yeah, low gear works better than high gear :biggrin_25523: Get as much practice as you can with whats required by your state.

Again what Ive explained I had to go through was in the State of Washington and this may be different in your state.

Just noticed your state is PA. Here is a link to your DMVs commercial drivers guide: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/drivers_manual/commercial_manual.shtml
You want to check over chapters 10/11/12.

I just passed my test 2 weeks ago.It was pretty tough. The state troopers that give the test are down right in your face and want the right answer asap..But once you get over the nerves part just take your time.I came close to messing up a few times but caught myself.Mass CDL testing is big on Air brake test and the maneuvers.Once on the road he was cool. But doing the parallel parking he was watching like a hawk.lol

But like i said if you feel pretty confident, just get sleep, stay cool and take your time
