I am pleased to see this question on the board. Unions have been in a downspiral for decades due to the mind control and legislative union busting tactics of the Man. Nearly 30 years ago they came out with this concept of the "Right to Work (for less)". Most recently, the current political leaders have come up with a union promoting legislation called the PRO Act which will dismantle Right to Work for less laws. Workers deserve living wages and benefits along with pensions and annuities to get them through their golden years, perhaps even leave something behind for their beloved heirs.

The anti union pendulum has begun is radical swing from the right back to the left, I am so happy to be living in these exciting times!

Some drivers where close to retirement when the trucking company closed, I think they were allowed to pay the remaining time to qualify for the pension.

I worked for one that closed.
Couple months later received a stock certificate.
    Had value of $10,000.00
Wasn't worth a penny because the company no longer existed.
I rolled the stock certificate into a tube and snorted cocaine with it, then afterward stuffed it with pot and smoked a doobie.

Sounds like the 80's. I had some hustlers on the dock that got caught by a camera. They got a job driving.

My dad was a mostly life long teamsters independent steel hauler. 1988 the steel division of White Star called on a Monday to tell everyone they no longer existed. He had a new 88 cabover FL and 1987 55k set of City weld doubles. With a fight they gave him the option to purchase 5 years. When he retired, they took the 5 years away and didn't honor it. Recipts, court and lawyer accomplished nothing. He only got his 25 years retirement. Chalked it up to being F.A.S.H. member and stiring things up in the 60-80's. Spent the next 30 years ##### them every chance he got.

While I'm not a pom pom waiving fan of the Teamsters, being a member has provided me a fruitful career for 30 of my 47 years of driving a truck.
Given the choice to make 30% more for doing the same work, I chose to pony up my monthly dues and put up w the grief and aggravation it sometimes brings. We've all heard the jokes and truth told I've known some lazy sob coworkers in my day, but never thought it was soley because they were union..
Those types are gonna be worthless wherever they are.
I can tell you to a man who, here at my job, will give you an honest days work for a honest days pay and who won't just like any other job.

We are all out here for the same reason and that's to earn a living, to provide for our families and their futures. To make a living wage, and to afford to stay in the middle class.
All I ever wanted from 1974 when I started trucking was to earn enough to pay off a mortgage, get a new car every few years, and afford college for my kid. And if I had enough left to take the wife on a vacation once a year. My choices have let me do that and more.

Don't know where the future of unionized labor is headed but given the opportunity I would go for it, and hope they stay solvent thru your career OP.

The time is ripe for the teamsters to take trucking back ..will they ? ...probably not cause they got fat and lazy in the 70s and will never gain it back .
I have zero issue with union companies but the teamsters screwed themselves.
