Hate to break the news to all of you, MREs in surplus stores are not the same as those in the military, the congress decide back in 1997 to curtail the resale of MREs to anyone. Those in surplus stores are some times civilian version of the MREs, which are missing a few items like the FRH and a couple other items while many are what you can call knockoffs with poor food quality.
By the way a while ago, like in 1984, I bought a surplus package out of ann arbor which came out of u of m's bomb shelter, they were gutting it. Well in the package was both K and C rations, and also a bunch of food canisters that was used by the kitchen detail during the war. This canisters were meant to keep food hot. I wish I knew what happened to them but anywho I took one case of each and decided to hold a little dinner party for my friends, the food was still good but man it wasn't all that great, can understand why my uncles hated K rations and my cousins hated C rations. MREs are much better. If you want to know what they tasted like, get a can of corned beef from an English manufacturer made over there and you will get the idea.
Got to add this.
The K rations were 1945 vintage, the c rations were of 1954 vintage.
I also got in that package other things, d rations (which are like energy bars) and tropical bars which are like d rations.Last edited: Aug 27, 2016

you just reminded me, I saw a video the other day, this professor instructing a college class of young people how to open a can of soup with a can opener. It took this professor about 5 minutes to figure the can opener out, twisting and turning, putting the can down on the table for stability, holding the can up etc. Finally got most of the top of the can off and used her fingers to pry open the can and showed it to the class who all clapped, whooped and hollered like their favorite team won the Superbowl.
Then some other people were posting the little can openers that came in the old military meals and the young people on FB had no idea what it was or how to use it, like it was some magic trick lolToothpick1, Big Don and Lepton1 Thank this. -
"Good luck, sir", says the enlisted crew chief with a smile on his face. -
