I have been considering getting my CDL, but I got a ticket last February for going 15 over (40 in a 25). I've already paid for that ticket, so I don't think I can contest it at this point. Where I live it wasn't considered as reckless driving. I also got a written warning 3 - 4 years ago for the registration on my car being expired. From what I've read I don't think the registration thing will be an issue, but I'm seeing conflicting info about the speeding ticket. Am I going to be able to find a job if I get my CDL? I was thinking of trying to pay for my own schooling rather than being stuck in a contract with a company that offers to pay for the training, but given my situation is that still the best option?

That ticket will be a problem.
Even though your area doesn’t define it as reckless, federal rules do and insurance companies do.
It may be possible to revisit that ticket in court to get it reduced or expunged, but it’ll take a lawyer to do it.

First thing since you don't currently have a CDL (or a permit?) you are not going to have problems with table 2 of 383.51. Time will heal this situation. A speeding ticket = to or > than 15 MPH over is not desirable to anybody that hires drivers. This does not mean you can't drive though. I recently spoke to a driver that got tagged in North Carolina with an 18 over in his POV and after reporting it to safety was told to slow down but they let him keep driving. These kinds of tickets are as far as you can go and not have major problems with insurance. You now have no wiggle room. Get another ticket for speeding and you might have to flip burgers at Bills TruckStop for a while until one drops off.

As the others have posted, the 15 over is a real problem. Even in your private car, it counts against a CDL as reckless driving.
You might get a driving job with a 1099 second chance company though, if you attend a private or community college cdl school.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Schneider allows for one speeding ticket like you have.
Call them and see if you can get a pre-hire.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
15 over is problematic, but it isn't impossible. When I began (2010), I had a speeding ticket for 17 over. That's the only speeding ticket I've ever received. I understand times have evolved, but I have seen drivers still get jobs. That said, you won't be able to be too choosy about where you can work. Just get your license, and submit an application to any and everybody. Let them tell you no. I started with Western Express. Start with them. First things first though. Get your license.

Which state do you live in?

You ain’t planning on speeding in a big truck, are ya?

In trucking the insurance companies consider 15 mph over reckless driving regardless of the actual state conviction.
For the love of everything Holy do not pay or sign any contract for CDL school until AFTER you find a good job that will hire you. Don't put the cart before the horse.
