I too need my CDL asap, also need housing, BUT I AM FINDING "affordable" places to stay. I currently live in Vegas, am about to pack the car & go to Midland, but MOST ARE SAYING TO GET THE CDL "BEFORE" COMING TO TEXAS...
Now seeking to get it ($700) before coming to Tx, my current expenses here in Vegas & cutting into my "future rent" monies... All to get the CDL.
Can someone PLEASE CLEARIFY THE STIPULATIONS OF GETTING A CDL VIA THE OIL COMPANIES OFFERING THEM?!?!?! I know about the OTR companies "offering FREE CDL trng" = they OWN you for 1 yr.
But are the oil companies any different???

Thanks guys for immediate responses !

I would get the cdl first. Take the tests and then rent one of those trucks for cdl test. Most service companies don't care if you can really drive just that you have the license. You won't be able to haul crude but you'll be able to do most anything else without experience.

I just moved into Midland to find work. Everyone whom I've contacted that had a $5-600 room for rent (before I got here)either must have rented them or they just don't call back. I think if they say room for $500, a guy calls up & offers $600, because I came very close to getting a room for $500 but she balked at the last minute for some strange reason!!! There are a few apartments for rent for about $900. Only problem with that is "contract for min. 6 mos." And of course you don't know what's going to be the job thing, till you get your job, etc.

I found a high but good deal, my own FEMA TRAILER FOR RENT $1,100 pr. mo. Everything included (util., cable, A/C, heat, furnished, hot, cold water, space, free wash/dryers, ice, tv room) ... the deal is $350 per week (better than $5-650 hotels weekly), or $600 per two weeks, or $1100 for the whole month. I shelled out the 1100 because I know I'm gonna be here to win a good job!!! Also I like my own space. No tip toeing around at 2AM after you get off work...

Gotta figure $275 a week for temp accommodations, your own place, park right there at the door, all amenities to boot... also WAL-MART, DOLLAR STORES, RESTAURANTS & TRUCK STOP JUST ONE MILE AWAY !

The guys name is Gabriel & the number is (Deleted) Tell him "Max from Las Vegas" sent you & ask for the deal I got & maybe you will get a little more bang for the buck!!!! (referrals often help)

I've not locked down the BIG GIG yet, still gotta throw the resume out to the right prospective employer, wish me luck :)

Hope this helps anyone coming down this way, hit me up with IM & will give ya what I've got so far...

Well not all the chickens are coming in to roost !!! I am putting in applications, but with my 4 yr old dui, slowing my roll ! I have a few good leads & will keep yall posted as possible.

Yes, housing is expensive & there will be that " 1-2 week verification time. I'd say 'HAVE A CDL BEFORE YA GET HERE'! Or come & take a chance on your own dime, like I am... I've got a $12 hr. job to start, but the bucks are with the CDL HAZWITH MAT ETC... PERIOD !!!

(i see they deleted Gabriel's number, hit me up with PM if yall need it)

MadMax; Do they have spaces available for rv's or FEMA trailers? I see ads for FEMA trailers in TX for anywhere from $3K to $11K. If lot rent is reasonable then it might be cheaper to buy one instead of renting for $1100 month. Then you can move where the work is.
