Hello, my name is Tyler i'm 34 with a good driving record, no fellonies, and drug free and i,m interested in becoming a truck driver. I need to know if its a good idea to go to a company like CR England to get my license and some experience under my belt or if i should try and get the money and go to a state school and get my license? Also what are some average first year wages for some one willing to work hard and keep driving between a company like England or getting my license and finding a different company? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Like no tarps said stay as far away from CRE as possible. See if you can find a school to go to then go drive with a trainer, there is central refrigerated in Salt Lake, but read on the bad company forums here first about Central refrgierated, they do have a school and training, but like i said read up on them first. good luck to you on your new career.

Check out Andrus and Cox right there in St.George, see what they say. Check out any community college for truck school, lower fees and much better training.

The best way to break into the industry is stay at your current job and 1) research what company has the best fit for you, and 2) what does that company require to hire you.

Most wannabees do this backwards and severely limit themself or impose financial hardship they could have avoided. As a general rule training at community colleges and vo-tech schools will be better quality and lower cost. For-profit CDL school like I went to will be higher cost, faster paced, and varying quality. You have to decide if you can afford the time and possible waiting list to begin one of the vo-tech courses or if you need a job quickly and go to a CDL school.

Some trucking companies don't hire students just out of school. Some trucking companies only hire recent graduates from certain schools. This is why it's best to take all the time needed to sort out which trucking company to work for and then decide how to get the license. Trust me, the license if the easy part.

Focus on trucking companies that are good to work for, not which companies make it easiest to get a license and get hired. The trucking companies that have a vast influx of students and new-hires are usually very bad places to work, which means you have a smaller chance of staying with them for the 1 year that is ideal to have before moving on to your second company. I'd bet 90+% of drivers don't stay at their first company more than one year. You won't really know a company until you work for them. You won't really know what factors make a good fit with a trucking company until you start doing the job.

For heaven's sake don't do what most newbies posting in trucking forums do and make excuses about all companies being about the same or the first year will be hard so you are volunteering for the company everybody is warning you away from. There is a wide variation in trucking companies and the job is hard enough without volunteering to work for a company that expect you to quit and treats you accordingly.

Look at trucking companies near your home. Talk to their drivers and find out how long they've worked for their current employer. Ask them what company they would lke to work for if they could pick any. Your best source of information will be current drivers that you can find. This is why I suggest trucking companies near you. As a general rule, the more info a trucking company puts on the web the better the chance they cycle through drivers like disposable napkins.
