Hello everybody, I received my CDL through Prime back in October 2014, drove for them for 4 months (including TNT) and left in February 2015. I did not abandon my truck, I had the dispatcher route me to the Pittston terminal when I told him I was quitting, and I left the truck there, so I suppose I left on somewhat decent terms. I have not driven a tractor-trailer since then. My DAC record looks ok, except for one minor accident that I didn't receive a citation for. What I want to know is, if I get rehired by Prime, how much time will I have to spend with a trainer before I get my own truck again? I still have my CDL, although I don't have a medical card at the moment so I'm excepted intrastate only. If any Prime employees know the answer to this, I would appreciate any info you could give. Thank you.

You'll be sent out for a refresher which I think is 20-30k miles. @FullMetalJacket would have a more accurate answer.

I was a rehire but between my time away from Prime I drive locally cdl. When I came back I had to do 15k miles with a trainer.

Another guy in my rehire class they made him do 30k so it varies depending on what Safety says.

I would fill out an application and call and speak with a recruiter they will have to send your application to a board for review for rehire and then they will let you know how many miles etc.

It took them about 24hrs to get back with me from time I submitted my application till I heard from my recruiter to let me know what Safety said.

It always surprises me, that people ask for an opinion in the forum, when a simple call, in this case to Prime, would get them an exact answer, and not just someone's "opinion".

And the waste of time it is to ask here, wait for some responses, and in the end having to call the company anyways.

Can you imagine calling Prime and saying: "some folks I talk to online, weren't sure of what I have to do to get re-hired, and what would the requirements be for a refresher, and would I be classified as a student?"

I think it's much easier to go directly to the source and know for sure.

It's 40k for a Cdl holder with no recent experience, as long as you can pass a pretrip, backing, and road test. If you can't pass all 3 of those tests, you'll have to start at psd again.

    @Broshears & @Robd1178 pretty well covered.

    I'm assuming you completed TNT?

With the length of time you've been gone & the minimal experience you obtained, you will essentially be considered an inexperience license holder. Biggest thing is the length of time without driving.

If you are accepted back, they will require the 40,000mi TNT to be redone. They usually count PSD as 10,000 of that, but with the length of time you have without driving, I would doubt they would allow you do only the 30,000. But, who knows....

Good news is.....you don't have to do PSD again, as you have your license! You will, however, have to go through orientation again. But, also no year commitment! Be sure to remember that fact, no matter where you look. You already have that license!

@Broshears came back, but he had been actively driving the whole time away. (Sometimes the grass is greener, sometimes not). So, sometimes they will cut short that required miles, based on trainer & dispatchers judgement. But, in your case..see you doing at least 30-40,000mi. Based solely on no experience beyond training & length of time inactive.

Heya, good luck to you on whatever you do. You DO have your license in hand, and a fair amount of training under your belt, though awhile ago.

You know your options, here. And, you know what your dealing with. @Chinatown . But, going to try to summon someone I greatly respect, whom may provide you with some other options you may want to consider. Don't forget, you do have that license in hand. The big part is done & over with. Do your due diligence before making any decisions, & chose what's best for YOU & your situation. Do not make a hasty decision you may regret.

Please post your local area, or include in profile. Will help him so much more on pointing you in the right direction. Also, what EXACTLY are you looking for as a final desired job. OTR, LTL, Regional, Dedicated......

You DO have that license in hand. Make it work for what YOU need.

    Good luck
    &
    PEACE

Yes, I completed TNT and was in my own truck for about 6 weeks before I left. Thanks for the info and advice, I appreciate it. I live in western North Carolina, Asheville area. As far as what my final trucking goal is, I would say either regional or dedicated with either reefer or dry van, but I don't mind doing OTR again for a while so I can get my experience in. I have no real commitments to this area so nothing is holding me down too firmly to North Carolina. The reason I was looking at Prime again is because I know the miles are there and the money is pretty good, especially for new drivers, and I more or less know what to expect from them. I haven't decided on them for sure yet, but I'm leaning that way.

Just a heads up, I am not sure if this is new, or something Prime has done all along, no one has mentioned it, but I was told by a recruiter if you have less than 6 months verifiable solo OTR, and are beyond 45 days from your last job or school, they will require you to sign a 1 year contract. The contract terms are the same as someone who is walking in the door without a CDL. This was deal breaker for me, I have a CDL, paid myself, and while I am not OTR, but work a company that does recoveries, they want me to sign on the line as if I have never been in the seat. There is a cost to TNT training, but not enough to justify a contract. Prime is making out on it as they will run you as a team after the first few weeks.
